Artist description
San Jose's Clay Wheels are a three-piece skate-rock combo whose motivation and inspiration has always been seeking, finding and having fun (preferably with a skateboard.) The band has a solid base in surf, punk and heavy blues and is affiliated with Eight One Nine Productions. Veteran skate rocker/bassist Ray Stevens II has spent time in seminal skate rock bands including: Los Olvidados, Drunk Injuns, The Faction, Odd Man Out, Goodbye Gemini, Cojones and the Modern Soul Quartet. Drummer Eric Powers other bands includes The Brownies, Willie's Conception, Modern Soul Quartet and Sloe. Guitarist Johnny Manak enjoys playing drums for skate bands, Nowhere Fast, OJ's Bronco and KPF.The members are all gifted social critics, who absorb themselves in over-analyzing meaningless everyday occurrences. Therefore, song titles refer to skateboard road trips, border collies and burrito residue. It is not uncommon for Clay Wheels to cover a tune by The Bone Shavers, The Challengers or The Art of Noise, if the mood strikes them.Clay Wheels are always ready to show up, break a sweat and drop some rock! |

Press Reviews
SF Gate- Beth Lisick - Fruit of the Vine Movie Review 3/00I don't know why surfer-dude accents get all the play when it's the parlance of skaters that's truly insane. Come to think of it, skaters are just more insane all the way around. And the Tempest was packed with them last Friday night for the premiere of the ,53-minute Super 8 skate doc "Fruit of the Vine," a film all about skating the tempting territory of drained swimming pools across the nation. With a great soundtrack, gnarly trick and wipeout footage and priceless interviews with U.S. skate rats of all stripes, "Fruit of the Vine" is indispensable for the cultural anthropologist in all of us. The film ended, a pint glass was hurled in salute by an overexcited fan and then S.F.'s furious The Loudmouths and San Jose's Clay Wheels rocked the bar into submission. Same party takes place this Sunday down south in the Jose at Fuel.Thrasher Magazine Review - September 1999Ray Stevens, one of skatepunk's earliest legend's, has been back at it for a while and just put out a CD/EP of his band, Clay Wheels. Ray plays bass and sings, skater Eric Powers drums, and Mike Fox from the Dwarves rounds out this line up as they tromp through five tracks that range from melodic and a little heavy to a finely executed surf romp. Oh yeah, Ray is also the mayor of San Jose-Wez Lundry |
