Artist History
Mainstream Trend is a 9-piece ska/punk band out of a quiet rural town in northern California by the name of Petaluma. The band got started in the summer of 96 when guitarist Dan Quinn met up with a fellow music lover and vocalist by the name of Mitch Buttress. The two got together and started playing and combining music that Quinn wrote with lyrics and some music that was written by Buttress. Before they new it, Kevin Roberts (bassist from Quinn’s past punk band) was back playing with them and it was the beginning of the spectacular ska band we know today. The question of a drummer came up immediately so Quinn handed the guitar to Buttress and gave the drums a try. This seemed to work so the next order of business was to find some horns. Past friends of Quinn’s, Greg Moore a trombonist and George Klemme who could play the trumpet like no ones business, both expressed much interest in the job so the band had a two piece horn section. It was then that the band got its first gig in their home town at a new band contest down at the local Phoenix Theater. They placed 2nd out of 15 bands and won $50 so they decided to keep the band thing up. From there they added tenor saxophonist Nick Long, and bary saxophonist Matt Meininger to the section to give it a little more depth. It was also at this time that Quinn decided that the band should let him go back to guitar, move Bassist Roberts who had shown great talent at the drums to the set, and add bassist Ross Fernandez to fill Kevin’s shoes. This would allow Quinn to sing back up and have Buttress just focus on singing. So the band continued playing local gigs for the next year until Moore, the trombonist, left the band because of many schedule conflicts. The band then added trombonist Andy Shipper and Tobi Grayson who played the trumpet, and the piccolo trumpet. From here the band continued playing through the summer of 97 and cut their first CD, “Jimmy and The Waffle Iron.” |

Press Reviews
Unfortunately the Band does not play any more because of many complications. Here is a brief story of why. When the band was started they where managed by James Craig. James started out as a really great guy. He booked the band with a good amout of shows and fronted money for the CD. After the production of the first CD Things went down hill with him. Warner Brothers got a copy of the CD and wanted to see the band... Craig never did anything to get them to WB. Some of the members would try to get in touch with Craig but communication died. It became a lot more difficult for the band to book shows. Something about the members: Mitch Buttress- The vocals, was your classic pretty boy every girl that saw him would instantly fall in love with the guy. Dan Quinn- The guitarist, and backup vocals was a great musician, the problem was he was great at everything. He was a jock played every sport imaginable. How he had time for the band is not known. Ross Fernandez- Bassist, was fat and really knew how to make a presence and he really knew how to slap that bass, but he didn’t like being told what to do considering he was the best bass player the band had seen. Kevin Roberts- Drummer, also great drummer also had the looks that would make girls grin from ear to ear, But Kevin was also the best basketball player in the league, currently several collages around the country are fighting and will stop at nothing to have him play for them. (Look out for this guy in the NBA in the Year 2005) George Klemme- Trumpet, was great for the band he had a great attitude he loved the music loved the fans but he never would try to hard at anything so when things went bad he didn’t think much of it. Tobi Grayson- Trumpet and piccolo trumpet, was a great player and seamed to love the music more then any one in the group. Tobi might be considered the counselor and manager of the band when things went bad for the band. Tobi would try his best to put things together. Tobi had a lot of connections with the music industry but it was going to take a lot of work for him to get the band in. Tobi had just finished the copyright papers when the band was dead for good. Tobi says “If we just hung together for another 3 months I could have shown the band the good stuff” (Well fans, listen to the music give them some feed back, maybe they will come around again if they can see from you that they had something going on.) Nick Long- Tenor sax, Nick kicked ass there is nothing wrong with Nick. Andy Schipper- Trombone, was also a very gifted pianist. Whan ever he played he would always add more to it which didn’t work to well because it promoted arguments with Dan who wrote the piece. If not in Mainstream Trend, Andy still has a future in Music. Matt Meinger- Bari Sax, was the ugly guy but that was all made up and more because he knew how to blow that horn. He was the spirit of the group. Definitely a really funny guy. When Ginger Spice quit the Spice girls Matt dressed up like Ginger Spice. |
