Press Reviews
REVIEW: JUICEMAGAZINE NOVEMBER,1999Leadlight Who Loves Ya Baby? (Candlelight)There's a certain jauntiness that's hard to repress. A tasty mix of white folk and Brit-pop style, complete with a mature production sound and tasty additions from a horn section that'd make any ska band proud. This Sydney based production combines the sound of a few scenes - from King St to the harbourside set, to cute effect. The sweet and dark faux jazz shuffle of "Long Road Home" is a highlight, a well penned portrait of destructive obsessions. ("You took the hand of the drowning man....I know you're scared to walk alone/But theres's no other way back home"). Nicely out of step. 7/10 Drum Media. 19th October, 1999Here's a little slice of pop in Triffids Go-Betweens mold. Opening with a weird, upbeat track called Raincloud, singer songwriter Nic Danta employs brass and clipped guitar to spark along the whole affair. Also the female backing vocals make this a classic opener.Having been in local bands, Nic Danta has taken his vision and pout out this sweet EP, which covers a lot of turf in six tracks. At the controlsof this recording is TJ Eckleberg who was also responsible for the production on Something Urban's EP which JJJ seemed to love and play regularly. Once again there are some weird jazz textures and bent feels that help make this record sound different and interesting. Long Road Home, is a strange number, both melancholic and showy.Dancing Pants, is a little bit like the Sugarcubes in Newtown mode, a funny but wordy song with lyrics like "Ride the swollen breeze like a kite down King Street." This song is on the money whereas Driving, is a little bit like a ska song that doesn't quite make the grade. Its all very quirky and genuine without taking itself too seriously. Like Joe Henry on his last album Fuse, Danta employs irregular mixes of jazz, groove and pop to come up with his own brand of music which is Leadlight.Who Loves Ya Baby?, is a shyly brilliant affair, which hopefully sees its main man going on to more interesting projects. Independent and at times intoxicating.SEBASTIAN SKEET |
