Artist description
The story of Red Letter Day begins in a loud basement in suburban Chicagoland (Lockport) where you will often find three teenagers belting out songs about lost love, current love, and growing up in general. Although getting to this point has been a lesson in itself for the members, this is the most comfortable the band has ever felt. The band spent a couple years in other bands trying to find the right chemistry with little success. More than a few times they had to break bad news to best friends because of stylistic differences and the realization that Red Letter Day was becoming more than just something to do for fun. It wasn?t until May of 2000 that the three founding members realized their potential together as just a three piece. The pieces are now in place as the band now has one view on the direction to go musically. Their demo, recorded over one weekend in the middle of June, truly captures the essence of the Red Letter Day sound. The music has a very poignant feel, but also seems to draw a very poppy backbone as well. All of the band?s members come from very diverse musical backgrounds but they mesh their influences exceptionally well together. With most of the band?s sound being carried on catchy and melodic, yet emotional vocals by lead singers Dewayne Hankins and Matthew Kelm and strong, intricate songwriting, the band has had little problems building a fanbase around the southern suburbs of Chicagoland.Currently, the band is playing shows throughout the area as often as they can, while still diligently crafting their songwriting skills in that loud suburban basement. |

Forgive me for not coming up with the clever adjectives to describe our style...we are punk rock. |

This changes all the time, if bands like Strung Out and MxPx didn't put out a crap CD after a really good one, we wouldn't have to change this all the time. |

Artist History
After a few tries at two guitarists, Red Letter Day decided they work best as the current three-piece that they are. Starting in May of 2000, the band recorded their first demo "The Formative Years of Devotion" in one weekend in Mid-June. Now they are just trying to get out there in the Chicagoland area to play some shows and spread the name. In the Summer of 2001, RLD went to work with Matt Allison (Alkaline Trio, Lawrence Arms) and together they produced "Wake Up to the Dream" which featuers 10 songs some from the Formative Years and reworkings of others. |

Press Reviews
"How much do the words 'Suburban Chicago Emo Pop' mean to you? It's becoming a genre unto itself, as much as SoCal Skate Punk has. Harmonized vocals and thick and chunky guitars are calmed by a quiet, clean guitar working underneath." - Mark M. (Listen.com) |
