Artist History
Newport Gestapo formed in January, 2000. From the unlikely subtropical climes of South Florida, the band aims to bring back the hard driving, yet melodic thrust of the initial punk waves, lost in the commercialized, sanitized punk of the current day.Drummer Jim Burke and Guitarist/Songwriter/Vocalist Victor Garcia-Rivera first collaborated in Cincinnati [later transplanted to Boston] punk pioneers The Edge. The Edge toured the punk circuit of the 1980s, hitting locales from coast to coast as well as opening for bands such as Husker Du, Dead Kennedys, Descendants, DOA, and nacent versions of No FX and Dinosaur Jr. The band released three singles and one full length album before calling it a day.In the mid-Nineties, Garcia-Rivera and Burke teamed up in the before-their-time bilingual Cuban-themed punk band Arranca. The team relocated to Miami, sans bass player, after the release of their critically-acclaimed CD, "Exile On Pain Street".After the breakup of Arranca, the duo searched in vain for a bassist that understood the discipline and primal power of 1977-style punk. They found him in the unlikely form of young George Rodriguez of Hialeah. George's grandfather, Guillermo Rodriguez Feiffe, is a famous Cuban composer, writing hits such as "La Negra Tomasa", now a standard for many Salsa bands, as well as a hit for popular Spanish Rock band Caifanes. The elder Rodriguez's songs have also been covered by Buena Vista Social Club. While George is proud of his heritage, his real love is for the 1970s punk anthems of bands like the Sex Pistols, Clash, and Misfits. His passion for that music perfectly match the experience of Garcia-Rivera and Burke.Newport Gestapo is an energetic trio whose catchy yet driven songs have the potential to put Miami's growing punk scene on the national and international horizon. |
