Sporting neither a label or issue number, this disc appears to be a demo for Jeff Jordan. His short resume and academic credentials, which serve as liner notes, further convince me that this is meant more to advertise Jordan than to sell discs. Nevertheless, the session features a wide mixture of tempos, all geared at featuring soloists in fairly linear and breif improvisations. Jordan is the highlight, with numerous quick alto leaps making up for the muddy audio on the drums and bass. The title tune is perhaps the disc's centerpiece, despite the annoying fade out just as the horns heat up in unison jamming. The shifts in tempo are refreshing, drawing attention away from the rather straight head-solo-head progression. As a graduate student at the University of South Florida, Jordan shows promise on this mostly hard boppish session. Surely his flightier alto runs and ability to cover the horns range with speed and agility in just a few bars (as on "Jes Because") will be to his compositional benefit in the future. -Andy BartlettThe Philadelphia InquirerSunday, March 27, 1994JEFF JORDANDISTRACTIONS(Self-Produced ***Stars) Saxophonist Jeff Jordan doesn't need a business card to introduce himself. The Uneversity of Miami graduate who move recently to Bensalem has merely to pass out his own CD, and introductions get made. His disc may be available only at big stores such as Tower Records, but it's worth a listen for the 24-year-old's metallic brightness and steamy playing. The moment you begin listening you hear personality and creativity at its finest. This is no sleepy time music. This is jazz with an attitude! Songs like Vicki's Closet and The Jazz Bullfighter are riveting arrangements that get you warmed up for what's about to come. This Tampa resident began playing saxophone at age 7, since then the credits are still rolling. Obviously Jeff Jordan has what it takes to make great music. He has even performed alongside such legends as Joe Henderson, Red Rodney, Bob Mintzer, Pat Metheny, Arturo Sandoval, Jim Snidero, and Ira Sullivan. If you like jazz, especially the croons of a saxophone this is a must for any jazz collection. Christmas is just around the corner what a perfect stocking stuffer!
