Artist History
In 1939 the Depression was still very much on everyone's mind. Nearly one third of all Americans had been out of work in 1933. Many of those who were working were working part time or at a reduced pay. Mildred Chatalian described her situation, "At the time, because of the Depression, I worked as a maid on the East Side. I had one day off a week, and my pay for the entire week was $2.00." Thus began Gunk. |
