Press Reviews
From Ill Literature zine:Averse Sefira have created here a very important work of modern American Black Metal. I use the nationalistic adjective because the entire sound of this album is, to me, a distinctly 'American' artform: the blending together of different disciplines, styles, and musical agendas into an original vehicle that is naturally pressed to its limit of expression. There are parallels with other bands: Immortal and Mayhem come to mind, in the unrelenting spirals of feral guitar riff-cycles that circle around one theme or main melody in each song section. This is a band that concentrates on simple and very effective riffs to carry the songs, and aside from the anthemic 'Pax Dei' there is absolutely no room for 'atmosphere' here or the delayed effect of music that builds on itself. Averse Sefira viciously attack again and again, crushing you with blasting rhythms and rabid guitar lashings, leaving little breathing space for subtlety or indecision. That, too, will be recognized as an 'American' trait - so be it. There is very little of the hackneyed 'grim' European sense of dark harmonic intent here outside of the scathing and throat-ripping vitriolic vocals (they have to be heard to be believed), directly emoting with raw power the dark thoughts expressed by the excellent lyrics. This is a band whose guitars and choruses sing joyfully in their violent agenda. But what makes this album unique is its almost seamless bonding of brutal death metal rhythmic intensity with a distinctly black metal style of pop melodicism. A simpler drumming style that concentrated on blast beats or high-speed blur tempos would absolutely put this in the European camp of black metal ideology. As it stands, 'Homecoming's March' is a blueprint for bands that wish to match the death metal style of guitar-drum syncopation with a more accessible melodic sensibility. As for the melody of the songs, the message of their themes is often very expressive and emotional, concentrating on riffs that never become too complex to escape immediate attention. In that respect, the main message of this album is in its immediacy and accessibility to listeners whose ears have been trained by the successive waves of European bands. I would hope that other bands within the US scene would learn from the talent and concentration of thought displayed here and work towards a suitably original offspring combining all the musical styles they have at their fingertips. This album is excellent, and I look forward to hearing more from Averse Sefira in the future. |
