Artist description
The music of Stone synthesizes a number of diverse influences into a unique and coherent whole. Drawing on the aggressive improvisation of Phish and Dave Matthews Band, and the technical influence of bands like Rush, Smashing Pumpkins and Led Zeppelin, Stone produces a sound that is equal parts groove, intricacy and exploration.Stones auspicious debut began in the spring of 1997 at their first show when they won the Penn State Behrend Battle of the Bands. Since that time, they have played from Rhode Island to Michigan peddling music that is sensitive to the energy of the crowd. In October 1999 the band won the I.C. Light - Coolpeppers Rock Challenge in Pittsburgh, PA. Their live show mixes their own original compositions with popular cover tunes and balances improvisation with straightforward melodic hooks. During this time they have opened for several nationally recognized jam bands including The Big Wu and The Disco Biscuits. The five members of Stone: bassist Jay Allman, guitarists Matt Robusto and Paul Desman, violinist Joe Crnkovich and drummer Adam Robusto, interweave vocal harmonies and instrumental melodies with the rich rhythms of drums and bass. All five musicians take their turn on lead and backing vocals with occasional forays to other instruments such as saxophone on the Dave Matthews Band anthem "Ants Marching" and didgeridoo on the original song "Sphere".In January of 1998, Stone entered the studio to record the complex and whimsical pop song "Smoke", the first recorded piece in a long line of songs which define the rising voice of Stone.Stones foremost love is live performance. Each musician strives to reach out beyond the traditional boundaries of his instrument, and to draw upon and contribute to the energy of their audience in a unique and accessible way. The song "Two" (which you can download from this site) has recently been played on WXDX and WDVE, two prominent radio stations in Pittsburgh. So look for more Stone activities coming soon! |
