Artist description
Rockin' Teenage Combo, Seattle's beloved space walking, tight-tripping, twenty-something acid-fusion trio will bring a smile to even the most serious funk, jazz, or rhythm head. Alternating between funky grooves, noisy outbursts, and melodic escapades, these three experienced players (they're not REALLY teenagers, you see - the name comes from a tongue-in-cheek Frank Zappa quote) kick out a vamp-heavy mix that's soulful, smart, uppity, unpredictable, always memorable - and quite often unforgetably blissful. |

Artist History
From the liner notes to their latest release (6/4 Getaway), here's part of their sweet story (excerpted): "Winter in Seattle, 1996. Another day, another dollar. Rush hour & a crying sky give me the cold shoulder as I hit the street. Sitting at a bus stop is out of the question. Sitting in the hotel lounge across the street is my destiny. Plush sofas, perhaps a fire, and music! Why didn’t I think of this before? As I settle in, a Latin rhythm instantly pricks up my head – and I turn to see a trio locked in a groove, eyes closed, workin’ on their bliss. This is too good to be true, I think to myself, expecting the real hotel-lounge band to reveal themselves at any moment. But the cheese never arrives, and I stay glued to my easy chair, basking in the musical warmth. So goes my first encounter with the Rockin Teenage Combo, who, at that time, had recently come together. Having seen their competition, it seemed like just a matter of little time before they’d tear up the local clubs, and I was right..." |

Group Members
Keyboardist Dara Quinn hails from the beautiful Tri-Cities, in Eastern Washington. "Growing up 20 miles downstream from the Hanford nuclear reactor didn't affect me at all," says the radiant keyboard player. She's played radioactive piano since the age of 6, along with studying clarinet, oboe, trumpet, steel drums and percussion. Her impeccable and original sense of rhythm (and undeniably heavy chops) have made her a Seattle-based groove merchant of the highest order. In sum, her musicality is nothing short of magnetic. Bassist Paul Kemmish is Dara's longtime partner in crime. He's a Seattle native who's been playing locally since high school. His electric bass skills were molded by some of the funkiest bassists in the Northwest, and his ability to groove has been with him all along. Upright bass came into the picture later, and nowadays one may find PK slapping the wood on the upright just like a Tuesday night date - at any given time. Drummer Oliver Klomp plays on RTC's first two albums and part of the third. "Olli" is one of Seattle's most dynamic drummers - and thus built up some impressive credentials right from the start. Popular area rock bands such as Gruntruck and Tantra-Tantrum have utitilized this Cobhamesque drummer. Odd time signatures and glorious solos are his specialty. RTC's next drummer, the ultra-versatile Dave Hill, has also worked with some of our area's very finest musicians - and currently finds himself collaborating on a project with former Santana drummer (and fellow Seattleite) Michael Shrieve. |
