Artist History
Michael Whitfield was born in Person County North Carolina on October 17, 1950, in the town of Roxboro. Michael's first introduction to music began when he was a baby. His mother, Mrs. Alberta Whitfield would keep the record player going constantly during the day. Mrs. Whitfield was a member of a gospel singing group known as the Covington Five. Michael's father, Mr. Roosevelt Whitfield, was a member and manager of The Silver Moon Quartet in Roxboro. They met in Roxboro and married in May, 1948 and two years later Michael was born. "So many times in this life, we're blessed with God's Holy Inspiration, His Compassion, His Anointing, and yes His Touch and we take it for granted. My parents taught me that when I was a toddler I would place my bottle of milk under my feet and kick it out on the floor to get their attention and when I did, I would say.. . ma, play some records." My inspiration and eventual vocation to music was partly due to my mother playing gospel records for me and my listening to the various Quartets of that era. I began to sing in churches at the age of 5. As I grew older, my exposure to music increased as I would follow my father's group around to different churches in the area. I learned to play the guitar at age 12. I was a self-taught musician listening to many styles of gospel guitar players, and realized I had a talent for playing that instrument. My father bought me my first guitar and amplifier when I was 5 and I played guitar for my father's group. Then, in 1972, at the age of 22, I taught myself how to play the piano and became interested in the electric organ. Soon after, I bought an electric organ and was teaching myself by humming around tapping on the keys and listening to other artists. In 1980, I wanted to pursue further endeavors and joined Willie Banks and The Messengers of Jackson, Mississippi. We traveled 38 states with this professional group and enjoyed the experience, but there was a call to return home because I felt a need to be about my Father's business. I was a musician for several churches in Durham, Person, Alamance and Granville counties between l988 and 1989. In 1989 I went to Peace Missionary Baptist Church where Rev. W.E. Daye is Pastor. In 1992, I joined Peace Missionary Baptist and married Rita Hinton. I am still at Peace Missionary Baptist Church and serve as Minister of Music under the guidance of God the Father, Son and Precious Holy Ghost and Dr. William E. Daye. Please listen and let God speak to you as you listen to this CD. "It's All In The Name of Jesus" Michael Whitfield |
