Artist History
Larry Bright's energizing drumming has earned him a place as one of today's hottest new jazz performers. His advanced rhythm patterns and explosive style has gained him acclaim as the preferred drummer for progressive jazz artists worldwide. Larry didn't get seriously involved with drumming until he was in his late teens. He first displayed interest in drumming in the early '70's after seeing BIlly Cobham. "Man, I was just blown away with those new types of rhythms. I had never heard grooves like that." Larry began studying under master drummer Purnell Rice. He remembers, "Those times were hard. I was the oldest student in the class. I remember studying my paradiddles and patterns and these 14-15 year old kids would sit down and smoke me". Fortunately, Larry wasn't the type to give up easily. Bright decided then and there that he would have to practice better and longer if he wanted to make it. After a few years of basic skill development, Bright enrolled at the Peabody School of Music. It was there that he studied advanced rhythms and techniques which cultivated his individual style. Two and a half years later, Larry began his professional career. His first professional gig was with Michael Urbaniak in New York City. After Bright laid down a few tracks for the album, word spread about this sensational new drummer. Since his first gig, Larry has gone on to play with many leading musicians, including Sun Ra, Ahmad Jamal, Carl Filipiak, Big Mamma Thornton, Ben E. King, John Lee Hooker, Buddy Guy and Paquito D'Rivera, just to name a few. |
