Artist History
NASUM (naw-zum) was formed in 1992 by Anders Jakobson (guitar) and Rickard Alriksson (drums/vocals) with the intention of creating true, straight-forward grindcore in the old NAPALM DEATH tradition. By the Spring of 1993, NASUM had an offer for a 7“ EP from the German label Poserslaughter Records, which resulted in the now collectible Blind World NASUM/AGATHOCLES split 7”. Second guitarist Mieszko Talarczyk, added only weeks before this recording, would soon become an essential member of the band.. In November 1993, NASUM entered in Dan Swano’s Unisound Studios to record tracks they would submit to labels and for the touted Really Fast compilation. The nine tracks recorded during this session collectively clocked in at a whopping three minutes and thirty seconds (!) and contained a much more grind/crust-inspired approach, signalling a new direction in the NASUM sound. In September, 1994, NASUM re-entered Unisound and recorded sixteen new tracks, eight of which were released as the Smile When You’re Dead split 7” EP with PSYCHO on Ax/ction Records. The remaining eight tracks were featured on the Grindworks 3” compilation CD (also featuring Japan’s VIVISECTION, Sweden’s RETALIATION and Japanese grind freaks CLOTTED SYMMETRIC SEXUAL ORGAN) released by Miesko’s fledgling label, Grindwork Productions. NASUM kept getting heavier... After two and a half years of sharing records with others, Poserslaughter Records offered the band a mini-CD release. In February of 1995, NASUM returned to Unisound once again, recording twelve new tracks and six re-recordings of tracks from their November 1994 Domedagen demo. This session featured the first NASUM tracks with lyrics in the band’s native Swedish. In conjunction with the release of the MCD, titled Industrislaven, NASUM made their live debut playing gigs in Astorp, Sweden, and Berlin, Germany. Unenthused with performing live, Rickard announced that he was leaving the band. Several replacements were tested but nothing worked, leaving Anders to take the drum seat and Mieszko to handle all the guitar duties. In November, 1996, the “new” NASUM were ready to record again, and layed down twenty-four songs on an eight track in their rehearsal studio. This material was easily their most raw and brutal production ever, and the results were released as The Black Illusions split 7” EP with ABSTAIN on Yellow Dog Records and the World In Turmoil debut full-length 7” on Japan’s Blurred Records. By June of 1997, Mieszko had purchased the equipment that formerly comprised Unisound and opened his own studio, named Soundlab. Sixteen tracks for an international grindcore/power violence compilation released by the Finnish label Tylyt Levyt and a cover of the DISCHARGE classic Vision of War (for a tribute CD released by Swedish Distortion Records) were recorded and featured NASUM’s most devastating sound yet. A tape of these sessions made its way to Relapse Records who, upon hearing the material, immediately offered the band a full album deal. NASUM accepted and began composing more material. During December, 1997 the two grindcore visionaries holed up in Soundlab and recorded forty-two new songs in a mere two month period. Thirty-eight of these tracks became Inhale/Exhale, an album that took the grindcore world by storm. Inhale/Exhale became an immediate grindcore classic! Walloping listeners with a lightning speed blitzkrieg of sonic violence harder and more varied than anything the band had ever created. Inhale/Exhale delivered crushing grindcore with shout-a-long choruses, blistering blast beats, ravenously crusty riffs and just a hint of “that Swedish sound.” Extremely competent production accentuated the power of the band’s musical activism. Social concern and political frustration formed the basis of the band’s lyrical attack, and harkened back to such classic Swedish hardcore bands as MOB 47, CRUDE SS and ANTI-CIMEX, but with the added extremity of the late 80’s/early 90’s Swedish death metal bands like NIHILIST/ENTOMBED, CARNAGE and REGURGITATE. Press reactions were amazing, to say the least, as the sheer extremity of the band’s delivery impressed both varied music publications. Hot on the heels of Inhale/Exhale’s release, NASUM made their way to the U.S. to join labelmates SOILENT GREEN, TODAY IS THE DAY, EXHUMED and MORGION on the 1999 Relapse Contamination tour. Kicking off the tour with an absolutely crushing set at the 1999 Milwaukee Metalfest, the band played the first half of the tour and took audiences by storm with their insane live show. A mammoth set at the legendary CBGB’s concluded the band’s 1999 U.S. dates, leaving grindcore fans drooling with anticipation for NASUM’s next U.S. jaunt.NASUM now return with a vengeance on their second full-length, Human 2.0. Playing no-nonsense, blistering grindcore, NASUM blast their way through 25 ferocious tracks of their most intense, angst-ridden metal to date. Emerging from the shadows like a black swarm of terror, the three-man wrecking unit annihilate all pretenders and expose the “old and tired” as mere understudies. The band has infused a whiplash-inducing groove into their punishing grind, producing absolutely relentless songs that detonate with an energetic attack. Concussive songs such as Multinational Murderer’s Network, Gargoyles And Grotesques, Defragmentation, The Idiot Parade, Parting Is Such Sweet Sorrow and the frightening Sometimes Dead Is Better are fiery examples of NASUM’s blistering grindcore prowess. With a lyrical base that touches on the political, the analytical and the sarcastic delivered with a frightening conviction, NASUM ensure that their bark is equally as venomous as their bite, destroying anyone and anything in their path. 2000 is the year of NASUM...Human 2.0. |

Press Reviews
“The full-length debut from this outstanding Swedish grindcore crew was recommended to yours truly by NAPALM DEATH’s Barney Greenway. And what a find ‘Inhale/Exhale’ (turned) out to be, encapsulating 38 monstrous headfucking tracks in a mere 45 minutes. Extreme metal doesn’t get much better than this.”-Metal Hammer |
