Artist History
THE ONYAS Heterospective LP/CD It has been around 18 months since the release of the Onyas' second album "Six!", and the band has entered a particularly stormy phase in its "career". On the creative front pretty much fuck all has happened. A well-deserved period of laurel-resting was in order, because from '96 to '98 we were just so many light years ahead of ourselves and so far up our own arses that it's taken us this long to work out just what the fuck has been going on! October 1998 saw the band complete another highly successful 11-country European tour with the Cosmic Psychos and the New Bomb Turks. March 1999 saw Mad Mack finally hang up his stopwatch in indisputably defeated circumstances. Battered and smashed, he changed his name by deed poll to Umpire John Cronie and fell into a very serious love affair with a yellow plastic bucket. Despite this, a hugely successful New Bomb Turks/Onyas Australian Tour followed. Highlights included a sell-out performance at the final closing night of legendary Gold Coast dive "The Playroom" in front of 1000 punters, and the Turks' monster dummy-spit at each other in the dying moments of their third encore on the final gig. After this tour the band made a move south collectively to Rock City #17, Melbourne. Rigid and Jaws set up "Doletown", a warehouse renowned for it's wild late night drinking binges and bong-ons, roving housemates and police visits. Dropkick Records was formed by Rigid and the Onyas' staple benefactor B.D. Milne, and releases by Zeke and the New Bomb Turks followed. Meanwhile Cronie holed up in St. Kilda with his bucket and not much else was heard from him. In July the album "Heterospective" was recorded in Doletown. September saw a venue-closing, car-destroying tour of Brisbane and Sydney.October saw a psychosis-affected pair of shows with Seattle punk exponents Zeke.In this period six releases have seen the light of day: the "Allan Murray" 7"EP on Swiss label Sheep Records, the "No Concessions" 7"EP on JunkRecords from the USA, and four international compilations. Two of these are of the novelty tribute variety, to The Saints and Radio Birdman, where the mocking tones of the Onyas are entirely uncalled for. So that brings us to the year 2000. The new album "Heterospective" features 28 minutes of select hits from the last nine years' worth of sold-out singles and comp appearances worldwide. With any luck, those punters burdened with respect for the rock will be disenchanted by the unruly mess of flippant finger-pointing contained within. A US tour will commence on 26 May and wind all over the joint for three months, where we'll sign off at the Las Vegas Shakedown in mid-August. A different millennium, but a year in which EXACTLY THE SAME KIND OF SHIT WILL BE FOISTED UPON YOU, THE LISTENING PUBLIC, BY US, THE ONYAS. The Jungle Room 7:03 pm, Friday 5 May 2000 |
