    Press Reviews
when the atlantic monthly first appeared around here, i was stoked. it was just exactly what i had needed at this moment. mellow and cute emo pop in this shithole country's thrashing hardcore capitol. not only do i love their easy going pop tunes and sappy lyrics, they are also some of the nicest kids i can think of. after two demos and a bunch of shows they embarked on their first mini tour together with a band from the uk that they had got to know through the miracles of electronic communication. that band was called dina. three people who rock hard, drink hard and love to play cards while quoting bob tilton, china drum and hüsker dü lyrics. so how could i not love them? the original plan was that the atlantic monthly should be touring the uk in summer 2001 with dina in exchange for last year's euro tour. for a lot of reasons that didn't happen and the atlantic was on tour with red bank. still, the long planned split 7" with dina was released as a reminder of a time and places and people and faces and memories. that all and so much more. let them break your heart... "now here's a pretty rad split 7". vienna's the atlantic monthly contributes one beautiful track to this split, a very soothing, melodic song entitled "trains about to leave", which is 6 minutes of somehow soft, yet in a way somber/almost kind of depressing sounding indie rock that one may listen to on a rainy day or on a sunday whilst relaxing and taking time to just think about things. a very beautiful track from TAM. on the flip side, dina contributes two more poppy tunes that kind of remind me of garrison's new ep, and the second song reminds me of the pine a lot, especially when the beginning kicks in. all the songs on this record fit together very well, and they make for an excellent split. pick this one up!" - www.calamityproject.com "oh wow. i like that. the atlantic monthly are from vienna and play good music anyway, some lazy sunday relaxo indie rock, and of course a bit depro (...). wanna hear more of that! on the flipside there's 2 nice harmless but nice pop songs from dina." - choke fanzine "the atlantic monthly are from vienna and have put down a very soothing indie track for this record. "trains about to leave" has all the reflection and moody introspection of any other good song of this genre. all their pieces flow together to create a very listenable song. dina contributes two more indie songs to this release, though their are are more poppy and sound like texas is the reason at times. dina's lyrics seem a little more cryptic, even though the main personal themes are plain. these two bands complement one another in as much as they differentiate styles within the genre they fall into." - heartattack Stickfigure Mailorder "a split between two European indie/emo bands. The atlantic monthly are from Austria, and dina are from England. Both bands play total melodic indie/emo stuff that fans of deep elm, b-core and defiance releases should check out" Audiogalaxy wrote: Competent emo-tinged indie pop, with a strong hint of melancholy and a lo-fi aesthetic. These are demos, and still need a bit of polish, but the nuggets are there. other listeners liked: sonic youth, built to spill,... BakedBean.net wrote: Sort in the rock section of emo. Scream the lyrics out your window after you break up with your girl. A tighter, European mix of Mineral, Rainer Maria and The Cars. Choke Fanzine "oh wow. i like that. the atlantic monthly are from vienna and play good music anyway, some lazy sunday relaxo indie rock, and of course a bit depro (...). wanna hear more of that! on the flipside there’s 2 nice harmless but nice pop songs from dina." Austria Hardcore Page this split 7" of the atlantic monthly from vienna and dina from liverpool is a cute new emo release on firewalkwithme rec. the atlantics show once again how slow music made in austria can sound like. goodbyes, sadness, strings, nice harmonies, fem backups,... 6:03 might be a bit too long for a song like this - but since its the only song by them on this release its quite ok - and on one of your sad days you'll be glad to have a song to cry along with that doesnt end before you feel better... liverpools dina put 2 songs on this release... their sound seems more experienced than the atlantics' - definitely good stuff... i especially like "sea murmur" since it is a faster up beat song to dance and sing along with. pretty lyrics, pretty music... just like the cover... i like baby blue - i like firewalks designs... the record comes on white vinyl.
