    Artist History
Monastery was formed in november 1997 by Jacob-Hans Kingma, Tom Bak and Stef Heuker after they decided to stop their band Procreator. First Monastery mainly played Death/Black metal. Because the band wanted to musically develop more, they began to search for a second guitarist to enhance there sound. After changing a couple of times from some potential candidates, Monastery finally found a suitable guitarist: Jeroen. From this moment on Monastery included some influences from the Thrash and Heavy metal into their new songs too. Because of this these new songs became more technical and alternated. Because Monastery now had a stable line-up, they decided to record a demo-cd. The recordings took place in January 2000. This 5-track demo called 'Remains of the Monastery' has been released March 13th 2000. The reactions were very good. 'Remains of the Monastery' has been reviewed very well by the press, among which Holland's biggest metal-magazine 'De Aardschok'. After the release Monastery went on the road to make the dutch stages unsafe. In 2001 the band managed to play live every month throughout The Netherlands. Because of this Monastery has layed a good foundation for there future-plans: recording a CD and playing live a lot. Because of the band's musical development the new songs after the release of 'Remains of the Monastery' became more in the vein of Thrash/Death metal. The drumrhythms as well as the guitarriffs became more technical and faster. Because the new songs were different from the old songs now, Monastery decided to record some new songs. This time using a professional studio environment. In June 2002 Monastery entered 'Franky's Recording Kitchen' (God Dethroned, Altar, Severe Torture) to record 'Soul Insanity'. With help from Jens v/d Valk (God Dethroned, Autumn) the band recorded three varied and brutal songs. 'Soul Insanity' has been released October 8th 2002.
