PASTIME / JUNKCULTURE
Topless America 21 - 07 - 00
...even ippo hadn't been having the most summery
July but still, mister sunshine had put his hat
on and come out to play when PASTIME hit town,
who are of course those loveable fellas formerly
know as the headchecks. First up, tho, were
locals JUNK CULTURE. Hadn't seen them before and
they were sort of a bit NIRVANA, a bit indie
grunge or something, you know. Best and most
standout thing about them was Graham's fab gtr
sound, totally cranked and ballsy, kinda like a
noise Steve Jones was hammerin' out back in '76.

BEERZONE / JUNK CULTURE
Ippo Steamboat - 04 - 08 - 00
....dismally failed in out capacity as gig
reviewers tonight, spending most of the show in
the garden soaking up the summer eve and talking
to gurls instead of being stagefront and paying
attention to what was going on. Sorry. We did
hear a lot of what was going on tho, and
JUNK CULTURE sounded a little more punk rock
than last time, ocasionally reminding us of
STUNTCHILD, plus they did a decent cover of
'moon over marin' and generally seemed to be
doing pretty well. The vocals could do with
being a touch more confident maybe on the whole
we quite like them. As for BEERZONE, we're not
huge fans of theirs or anything so we kind of
lost interest, we do recall hearing 'Gazza Gazza'
but by this time those young ladies mentioned
earlier were buying us beers so we wound up a bit
sozzled and everything got sorta blurry. Remember
getting home and making loads of cheese on toast,
thats about it. Oh well, straight edgers we ain't.

RED FLAG 77 / JUNK CULTURE / KINSKI
Ippo Steamboat 29 - 09 - 00
.....Still kind of jet-lagged after Beantown,
but it was nice to back to our old haunts for the
first time in what seemed like ages. Place was
pretty full so we went and sat outside, amazed
at how still and warm the evening was for late
sept, and from there we had out first earfull of
KINSKI. Keyboards, a guy singing who sounded
like a gurl, some half decent originals but some
rather poor attempts at covers (especially the
BUZZCOCKS' 'ever fallen in love....' and
RADIOHEADS 'creep'), that pretty much covers 'em.
JUNK CULTURE seem to have played a lot recently
and consequently we're starting to recognise a
few of their tunes, and we're starting to like
em too. They kind of switch between pounding
LURKERS style punk rock and some more NIRVANA
style numbers, they do KENNEDYS covers and
blasted out a fun version of 'Bodies' and even
tho he had a little trouble w/ his amp (hey ain't
we all!) thier bass player was twisting and
pulling at his gtr to get some interesting
feedbacky noises out of it. We were impressed.
Unforchanetly we missed the FLAG, they go caught
up in raffle and ran too close to the last bus
time but still, it was nice to be back in Ippo
and drink something different to Harpoon beer.

Junk culture area four peice band based in
Ipswich. They've just released this smashing
three track ep. They're sort of Indie-skate-punk.
It's cool to see a bit a bit of fresh blood in
the town, the mateys have monopolised the Ipswich
scene for too long & Junk Culture are younger,
better looking and far more exciting than any of
those whorey old rockers.
All Too Human
I don’t really know what to make of this one!
It’s catchy tunes and lyrics make it very 1977
style. But to me they are like a college student
type of band and they may not even be punk.

JUNK CULTURE "pumped up ...again" CDS - 3 tracks,
in my opinion the first is the best "again" is a
sort of whiny twisted 60s pop ditty taht is a
great song - the other two arent bad, but not
quite as good, a decent effort, looking forward
to hearing some more!
Smoking troll
As it turns out Junk Culture played first,
they stood up the on the stage before starting
looking like yer best mate, and then launched
into what can only be described as a wall of
sound that could be felt to your stomach, but
made your foot tap! They fired through about 8
songs, through which their singer spent more
time on the dance floor freaking out the natives
than he did on the stage. For the first time
ever at a gig here at the Portland Arms I saw a
singer that was getting members of the
congregation to introduce themselves over the
mike to the rest of the crowd! After about half
an hour they were gone, leaving me a bit confused
but most definately entertained!
