Press Reviews
What is it with Ohio pumping out some of the most kickass industrial in the country? Oh well...no matter. Having just listened to TRANSUM and I can say that this is quite some standout music. The first thing that hooked me was how well the beat blended with the guitars and programming. But that wasn't enough to make my head bob. Any twit with a half-decent sense of rhythm can do that. No, it was how catchy the vocals were that got me hooked on this music. Monsieur rj has some great pipes, and even through the vox distortion, the intonation is clear. That's such a novelty when most industrial vocalists these days let the effects become their voice rather than the other way around. I listened to all the songs and the only thing that let me know, for sure, that they were all from the same band was the singers voice. TRANSUM has a good range, and one that will sneak up on you as you approach the choruses. TRANSUM has an original inflection, definitely not something that will remind you of anyone in particular, in this case, that's a good thing. Once the chorus hits however, the voices seem to take flight, straining to break into the air and drive the messages home. Prepare to be surprised. While the vocals are center-stage, the instrumentals definitely do their job. The programming and guitar playing is solid, angry stuff. In other words, good music to drive to while shooting at other motorists...oh wait, I shouldn't mention that, right? Refreshingly melodic foray into the often harsh realm of industrial music. Similar to Klank in his use of melodic vocals over top of pounding industrial beats and heavy guitar riffs. How's that? TRANSUM has effectively bridged the gap between mainstream industrial rock and harsh darkwave, while losing the allure of neither. The Goth/Industrial stylings of TRANSUM bring to mind various aspects of Malign, Voice Of Destruction and 'Land of Rape..." era Ministry along with their own very unique and carefully crafted sound in a vicious, wall of post-apocalyptic sound, and an original vocal style that delivers the scathing lyrics to round off this intense act." The dark spooky melody consumes you into the music and the vocals and other assorted instruments slams you back down further into a hypnotic abyss. If I was a junkie needing a fix...TRANSUM would rank up there with any possible drug I could sniff, stick, smoke into my body. TRANSUM has gone back a few years and grabbed hold of a sound that is eerily reminiscent of many local Gothic/Industrial bands of that time. These days, gone are the artists it seems that have the daring to strap themselves down to a drum machine and a synth and rely on their creativity, or god forbid their vocal abilities to get their message across. TRANSUM is such an artist. Right away the rhythms grab you, taps you on the shoulder and you realize no, this is not something that you've had in your collection for years, but probably will. If you've been waiting for the storm of near rave-like repitition in modern-industrial music, now is the time to get off the bench, look up TRANSUM, and throw those headphones on. Something tells me we haven't heard the last of this band. Again in this case, that's a good thing. |
