Press Reviews
Reviewer: Heard Magazine
Coming out of Wisconsin, Phyllis Leonard's most obvious asset on this album is her great vocal ability, stretching from a folk style, through country & into a light-edged pop feel that's very interesting. Also evident is that she enjoys what she's singing & there's some well written material here as well. There are a few moments which don't grab me & these are the more overt country songs, though fans of that genre will find a lot to like on these, probably the best example of which is "Carry 'Ol Roy back Home". The opening track "Colorado Rain" makes a different inroad, mixing in a folk / pop atmosphere which is excellent & is one of the highlights for me here. The picks though, come at the close of the album, with a more contemporary pop feel which uses more traditional instruments to get the sound, with the closing few songs, "When The Sun Comes Up In The West", "You Lead" & "I'll Follow" & "Touch Me" which showcase Phyllis' voice at it's optimum. All up, this is an album that manages to transcend a number of genres & will appeal to many.
Mule Dog Magazine:
Phyllis had a nice variety of material on this CD including fortunately for us traditionalists some good ol' Traditional Country tracks The best of which are: "Last Call"(The Bartender's song), "Carry Ol' Roy Back Home" (a good ol' Wabash Cannonball type song with some nice slide guitar and pleasant vocal harmony). There are some very beautiful ballads including a nice one called "Hopelessly Yours" which is a little reminiscent of an Ann Murray tune. There is a nice "South Of The border" song called "When The Sun Comes Up In The West" that is one of the best of that type we've heard. It has the same sort of feeling as "South America" by Brian Wilson and Eddie Rabbit from Brian's fantastic "Imagination" CD. Like I said lots of variety here. There's even a really good Blues song here called "Touch Me". Very nice and easy to listen to with great lead vocals make Phyllis Leonard's CD a real winner |
