Artist description
Mean Gene Kelton makes his home in Houston, Texas, but he was "born in Mississippi, on the wrong side of the tracks"... as he sings in the song "Too White to Play the Blues. "I grew up in the 50's and 60's, being influenced by all styles of music. My Mother loved Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis and Southern Gospel. My Dad listened to Johnny Cash and Hank Williams. Hillbilly music played on my Grandpas' old radio every morning at the crack of dawn on WBIP in Booneville. "It was the blues I heard when I sneaked into the dirt-floor delta juke joints or stopped to listen to old black men on the street corners that got me hooked on blues. In Mississippi, blues was everywhere... blues was a way of life." "When I started playing in bands in in high school, it was a natural evolution for me to put blues licks in everything." "It used to p___ me off real bad when people would tell me that a 'white boy can't play the blues'. Whether or not a white boy can play the blues is a question that has certainly been answered through the years, many times. Influences, along with 20+ years of performing in smoke-filled Texas roadhouses can be felt on "Most Requested". Kelton's new CD, "Most Requested", accurately showcases the verstility of Kelton's talents as a songwriter and performer. He wrote all 15 of the songs, which cross the spectrum of musical styles - blues, rockabilly, country and Southern-fried rock 'n roll. "My Baby Don't Wear No Panties", a hard-driving blues/rock novelty song, continues to be the "#1 Most Requested song" for Sundays' blues shows on Houston's KPFT 90.1FM, |
