Artist description
Sick of trendy, commercial metal? So are we. We are
DISDAIN. Proud to be Old School. Proud to be New
Hampshire Mountain Metal.
From the back woods of Northern New England, the land
of Harley Davidsons and Mud Bogs, comes a Heavy Metal
sound all its own- heavy, fast, and melodic, with
tempo changes and guitar solos, not rappers and DJs.
Leading the charge is Disdain.
Disdain was formed in 1993 by guitarist Dan Jutton and
bassist Seth Johnson, after meeting at their probation
office. With a variety of influences, from Pantera
and Testament to Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden, they
had a melodic, guitar based sound. Drummer (and
master appliance mover) Dave Carbee was added next,
bringing a solid rhythm and thundering fills.
Completing the madness is vocalist Brian Kendrick, who
was found fixing his 4x4, drinking Budweisers and
listening to Slayer and Minor Threat. Together, they
create a music that is evil, yet beautiful.
Playing small clubs and local dives at first, Disdain
has progressed to such venues as CBGBs (NYC) and The
Middle East (Boston). They are also veterans of
several festival shows, including Milwaukee Metal
Fest, and the New Jersey Metal Meltdown. They are
currently on the Nitro Snowboards Mountain Metal Tour.
Disdain is also proud to have signed on to Screaming
Ferret Wreckchords, and is currently working on their
second full-length album. Driven by Addiction is the
highly anticipated follow-up to Molest the
Unfortunate, Disdain’s self-produced first offering.
With Screaming Ferret’s support, Disdain plans to go
national with the next release.
So, prepare yourself for this new brand of evil.
Disdain is on the way, preaching Mountain Metal loud
and proud. Rejoice, or run and hide. |

Disdain’s “Reign of Terror” intro guitar riffs takes you back to the days when Sabbath reigned supreme, then they kick into a metal march reminiscent of early Anthrax or Exodus.

Disdain is a band I found on a sampler disc I was sent and I decided to find out more about this band. They are out of the northeast part of the United States primarily in the Massachusetts area. They play a classic groove oriented style of thrash metal that is heavily riff driven in the old bay area style. After hearing their track for the sampler I was quite impressed and hoped they could live up to it on the full-length album. All I can say is that I was definitely not disappointed.
This is some really infectious kind of music…the kind that make you grit your teeth and bang your head with your fist in the air…:) Every song is mid to up tempo with some absolutely killer riffs. The vocals are damn near a death metal type growl but still understandable for the most part. I am not sure if this really fits the musical style as well as more of traditional thrash style vocalist would but it is still pretty damn good overall. The drumming on the album is excellent as well that really compliments the riffs to make them sound even heavier and menacing. For this being on a minor label I really have to applaud the excellent production as well since every instrument is easily heard in the mix and there is plenty of low end to really compliment the music even more.
There are only two things that bothered me and one is really minor. The minor one is that I wish there more guitar solos or more guitar harmonies present. I think it would add a little extra punch to the songs (There you go some free advice from a failed musician…lol). The only other thing that bothered me was really annoying. Track 11 (Armageddon) is recorded entirely backwards. I don't understand the purpose of that but I think it was a rather poor decision since you really want to end a CD on a high note and this certainly wasn't the way to go about it.
Overall if you are one of those metal heads that miss the good ol' days of the bay area thrash scene maybe you should check these guys out at www.disdain.homestead.com. You just might really be pleasantly surprised…:) Highly Recommended.
