Artist description
It’s about time for revolution. And although you may have heard that therevolution won’t be televised, Altered St8s will make sure that it is onwax, cassette and CD. This crew (made up of emcees Amene and lyfestile)began their mission in St. Louis Mo around 1995. Ripping open mics andciphers with a unique combination of social relevance and verbal combatskills has made them a staple in the St. Louis scene. They’ve shared stageswith the likes of Rubberoom, Souls of Mischief, the Pharcyde, and Mos Def. Selling their own self-produced, independent tapes and cds allowed them toexpand their fan base as well as raise the stakes for their peers.Eventually the Altered St8s phenomenon would have to spread to the outerreaches of the universe. In order for this to take place, an importantalliance between the crew and Son Doo Recordings was formed in 1998. TheBrooklyn based indie label is the perfect platform from which this crew haslaunched their potent attack on the dismal state of hip-hop (and the worldin general). Son Doo’s in-house producer Cave Precise (who’s produced gemsfor lyricists like Yah Supreme and Anom) lended his remarkable productionskills to create some of the most worthwhile music ever heard. Their firstsingle “Headbanger’s Ball” (which features their gifted labelmate Oktober)was released in September of 2000. Mix-show djs and hip-hop supportersaround the country supported this first strike. The energy of that recordwas enough to get even the most stoic of hard-rocks amped. The hook of thesong sums up the content of the record “It be the head-banger’s ball forthose about to rock/ We lick shots for have-nots/ Are you a man or a mascotin this profession? / Take it as a curse or a blessin’.” The b-side of thesingle “Seasons” is also a favorite among fans, and is the perfect balanceto the a-side. Focusing on the day-to-day interactions between the sexes, “Seasons” gives refreshingly non-misogynist insight into male/femalerelationships. Knowing that there is much more ground to cover; Amene andlyfestile have a stockpile of new ammunition aimed at a record store nearyou. For any additional info or booking please contact lyfestile@hotmail.com or icejah@mymailbag.com. |
