Trenchant ? 3 Song Demo. "Submit To The Riff" CD and "Life Of Stone" 10" record on Badman Records Review by: Dan Beland (StonerRock.com) There are several definitions for the word ?trenchant? in the dictionary but I?m betting my money that the definition that this band is naming themselves after is ?vigorously effective and articulate?. Like a carefully blended mixture of Karma to Burn precision, Eyehategod plodding and a Molehill calibre screaming vocal style the 3 songs on this demo are the epitome of effective and articulate! From the crunch of every guitar chord and the wail of feedback to the plodding bass line and the lightest cymbal taps every note and sound in these songs is articulately deliberate and effectively heavy! Trenchant?s overall sound is extremely heavy yet surpisingly clean and crisp. There is only very limited use of effects, besides a few very clever vocal overdubs, and this seems to be the main focus of their sound.. It?s as if their goal is to create the heaviest sound possible with just the standard guitarist, bassist, drummer and singer and that?s i t. No fancy effects pedals, no complex guitar overdubs, no elaborate production techniques just the raw power generated by a few guys, a healthy heap of distortion an d a few really loud amplifiers! Even though this is only a 3 song demo of their most recent material it contains nearly 30 minutes of album quality material with an album quality recording. The 3rd song ?One Ton Waltz? is 15 full minutes of plodding and mezmerizingly powerful heavyiness mixed with guitar riffs that could summon the devil! The guitarist a lso displays an uncanny ability to control his feedback, to the point where it sounds like an instrument unto itself, creating eerie overtones of satanic doom throughout.. It?s a truly awe some song that reminds me a lot of Monster Magnet?s Tab?.25 in it?s ?devil chanting? inspired cerimonial ambiance. The first two songs ?Impaled? and ?Threshold? are im mense, and crushing with slowed down Karma to Burn style riffage and screaming vocals that are unworldly in their intesity. Trenchant is officially my favourite ?screaming vocals? style ban d now and I?ve hardly even had a chance to listen to their 9 song self titled debut that was released last year.
TERRORIZER Magazine #80 August 2000 - TRENCHANT ' Trenchant'Continuing the '96 retro vibe be gun wit h Sleath, Trenchant is the current home of sometime 16 drummer Jason Corley, who quite rightly pointed out that we voted 'Drop Out' one of the best records of the year. This nine-track self released album shares Drop Out's startling catchy instinct for a tune, but does so in a slightly less selfconsciously sludgey fashion, vocals calling the chant over single mindedly metal guitarwork stripped raw and bare of all sylisms. And I'll say it again: Trenchant sure can write tunes. With time, I may become as obsessed by this as I was about drop out. More material is on the way too. Fans of Raging Speedhorn, 16, Southern sludge and anything from California without baggy trousers should buy a copy. µ |
