Press Reviews
SEATTLE — Young Swing-Jazz at its finest... Led by Joe Mackee, the Mack Daddies are enjoying the fast paced swinging jazz scene, which is taking the younger generation by storm. A singing prodigy, Joe was asked to perform with the Royal Hawaiian Jazz Band, and the Honolulu Symphony while growing up in Hawaii. His musical career was interrupted by a call from Tiger Beat magazine. He was a televised teen idol and girls wanted to know about him. Among the scores of fan mail he also received offers from Hollywood agents who placed him in TV commercials, and won him featured rolls in television shows like Hawaii 5-0, Magnum PI, and The Young & The Restless. By the time Joe Mackee was 17 he had starred in three feature films; Max Dougan Returns (20th Century Fox), Bad Manners (New World Pictures), and Lost In America (Warner Brothers). He trained for acting at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York, and Hammond Studios in Los Angeles.
Joe remained in Hawaii to finish high school and after graduating chose to start his adult life in (then) America’s Most Livable City—Seattle. Joe began making the rounds as a guest performancer with Seattle jazz groups, and big band orchestras including Seattle’s legendary Tuxedo Junction, led by Bill Sheehan. Under Mr. Sheehan’s guidance, Joe sought out only the finest musicians to form his own group. With the pop charts being led by Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and The Cherry Poppin’ Daddies, the name “The Mack Daddies” seemed to fit right in. During a rehearsal with Brian Kirk at Seattle Central College, a young piano phenomenon by the name of Eric Verlinde caught Joe’s ear and since that day they have made quite a team. Acting as the Mack Daddies’ Music Director, Eric, along with Darren Reynolds (drums) and Devin Gaylord (bass) have collaborated to become a polished rhythm section for any sized venue. Add as many saxes, horns or bones depending on the gig (or let the trio strut their stuff), and what you have is the hottest new group on the market.
Joe has a voice that sounds much older than his years. All these year’s he’s stuck to being in love with the great Jazz standards as swung by Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, and Sarah Vaughn. Joe’s in love with Jazz and Swing music, especially when swung by a Big Band. In Joe Mackee’s advance sampler CD, he brings together Seattle Jazz greats Steve Rice (piano), Clipper Anderson (bass), Mark Ivester (drums), Bill Ramsey (saxophone), Brad Allison (trumpet), and Gary Shutes (trombones). Beth Winter joins Joe Mackee in the difficult and obscure duet Moody’s Mood For Love in this timeless recording. Recorded at Horizon studios with Roger Wood and Bill Gibson, the first two songs are released as an advance sampler by Seattle record label Red Rocket, USA. Also on the advance CD is Joe’s composition
Whatever co-written with Suzanne Strickland. Whatever and Moody’s Mood For Love are receiving breakout
radio play and interest from national radio syndicators.
The Mack Daddies are excited to be performing and while working to finish the album, they are rehearsing for
some big band performances to promote the forthcoming album.
