Artist History
In the early 1990s Nate and Corey played together in a band called The Petting Zoo in Kirksville, MO. After the unfortunate demise of that band, Nate and Corey somehow ended up both relocating to the Kansas City area and decided against their best interests to make music again. At one of their record store appearances, Nate and Corey ran into an old high school friend of Nate's, Dave. It just so happened that Dave played drums and it just so happened that over a few beers we discovered that Dave's tastes in music were as good as his taste in beers. After playing together for a few months, auditioning numerous bass players, Dave convinced his friend Elizabeth, who had been on hiatus after a stint with the Kansas City band Neverready, to try out. She, too, had similar tastes in music (and in beer), and the band was born in the fall of 1998. In July of 2000, The Welterweights lost Dave Orvis as their drummer, in Spinal Tap fashion. In September of 2000, Mark Gardner agreed to play drums for the band. In August 2001, continuing the Spinal Tap trend, Mark left the Welterweights, and in September 2001 Jeff Thomason agreed to play drums. We're still making up the history. |

Press Reviews
"The music here is hard 'n' melodic alt-country/rock and the influences are widespread: mostly Whiskeytown and early Uncle Tupelo with bits of the Bottle Rockets and a shot of the heyday Replacements tossed in." - Timothy Finn, The Kansas City Star. "Obviously, The Welterweights know how to choose their fights, and on the strength of this EP the band should move up a few notches in its quest to be among the scene's hardest-hitting champions." - Andrew Miller, PitchWeekly |
