The Lucky 13 Band – Millennium Demo
Remember that scene in Adventures in Babysitting where Elizabeth Shue is in that blues bar and she gets on the mic? She ends up kicking ass and winning the esteem of all those big (and I use the word "big" here in two different ways) blues fans. Well, these guys would be an even bigger hit in such a situation than Shue!
I slipped this demo in for the first time today while I was making lunch. I turned it up and was quite impressed. There are only four songs but each of them is a juicy little blues nugget. I then hit play again and listened for a second time -- good stuff.
Next, I sat down to get some background info, and that is when I became even more impressed. When I tell you that this is a young band, I mean young! Four of the five members are juniors in high school! The fifth is ancient -- he’s a high school senior!
Four of the five musicians are also in other projects ranging from high school jazz band to marching band to Akron Youth Symphony.
This demo has obviously impressed more than myself because it has sold out of its first printing. They will be re-issuing it soon. As a matter of fact, it may already have been re-issued by the time you read this. You can also check out three of their tracks at www.mp3.com/TheLucky13Band.
They describe themselves as a band specializing in rock and blues. I feel that is a fair description. The first song on the demo, "Funeral in The Rain" struck me as a classic rock tune. So, I was expecting a classic rock band, but then the next track, "No Idea" kicked into blues gear and the rest of the demo continued on in that vein with hints of classic rock throughout. It’s a nice combination. They have a really good blues-rock sound.
If you are interested in checking out some young local talent, you can pick up a demo (once re-issued) at Time Traveler (Cuyahoga Falls and Kent), Digital Daze (Chapel Hill), or Mike’s Place (Kent) for a mere five bucks. You can also check out their Web site for further information at www.personal.kent.edu/~daross/lucky.htm. If you would like to experience them live in action, you could cheer them on at the High School Battle of the Bands at the Odeon on January 6. It’s nice to hear young musicians venturing into different musical genres!
