    Artist description
These days, when exploring the past seems to be nothing more than a continual search for samples to shore up an artists own desire to create a good hook, a performer like Stone Addison is a breath of fresh air. The Edmonton-based group, headed by Ben Klein, singer, songwriter and multi-talented musician, not only respects the past, but has managed to inject the spirit of much that went before into their very contemporary approach to making music. They even namedrop a late great 70s balladeer in one of their finest songs, The Remains of Nick Drake, and admit to a great affection for his work as well as that of other writers including John Lennon. With small town roots in such typically Canadian towns as Cranbrook, BC, and Hanna, AB (home of Nickelback), Stone Addison was able to develop their sound as they themselves heard it. Still very young, they have been noticed by a great many over the last couple of years, including the Indie Awards at Canadian Music Week where they were among the top qualifiers at the 2001 event. Their appeal, too, seems to be across the board. How many other artists can claim to have opened for headliners as diverse as The Philosopher Kings, Prairie Oyster and April Wine? Simply put, when the music performed is old and new at the same time, and draws on diverse influences, this case of multiple musical personalities does make sense. To date they have released three CDs in Gold Mercedes, Storybook Cinema and most recently the new Stone Addison EP. The tracks for this EP were recorded at the legendary Mushroom Studios in Vancouver, British Columbia, where the band was glad to spend the beginning of 2002 being produced by Ian Jones, onetime member of Virgin act Pluto, and at Power Sound Studios, Edmonton, Alberta, by Phil Anderson. The mixing and mastering was performed at Metal Works Studios, in Toronto, Ontario, by none other than Juno-nominated engineer Nick Blagona. During that time, too, Stone Addison toured throughout BC and Alberta, and plans are now underway to journey further east now that Ben has finished his studies at Grant MacEwan College in Edmonton where, not surprisingly, he was taking the Performance and Production Arts courses in the music department. So what is at the heart of their appeal? Ben figures: The band has an honesty that other bands might not have. We are committed to being ourselves. It seems to be paying off, so far, and Stone Addison couldn't be happier. With a current catalogue of more than 50 composed songs they are anxiously awaiting the next level of success that should come their way in the near future. Watch for them on the road, and be prepared to hear an act that sounds like no one else, though they readily admit to having a strong appreciation for the other writers and performers from whom they have learned their craft.
