Artist description
Lane & the Badass Chickenbones play an energetic brand of rock 'n' roll tempered with country and bluegrass influences like mandolin and slide guitar. It’s a wry blend that simultaneously tips its hat to its country roots and embraces with soul-baring gusto the pleasures and pitfalls of urban life.
The band's output ranges from thoughtful ballads to up-tempo toe-tappers that have audiences pushing back the tables and dancing, as singer-songwriter Lane Murchison wraps his plaintive voice around clever, honest lyrics about life, love and guitars.
Formed in 1997, this San Francisco band brings together four unique talents and blends their stories and styles in a sound fueled by dueling guitars, loping bass and driving drums.
Lead singer-songwriter-acoustic guitarist Lane is a multi-instrumentalist, artist, playwright, commercial composer, music teacher and one-time bike messenger. Lane was a member of the San Francisco surf band The Swamis and plays bass for Ape, the exotica band led by tiki-carving frontman Crazy Al Evans.
Elbow to elbow with Lane, lead electric guitarist James Nash brings the music to life with a scintillating, eclectic style that ranges from the hot-picking bluegrass of Appalachia to the slinky slide guitar and warm rock phrasings that are the hallmarks of Southern rock. James frequently tours and performs with perennial new-grass favorites The Waybacks.
Mike Anderson's solid bass lines and the heartbeat pulse of drummer Kevin Woodhouse lay down a sturdy foundation for the band's musical exploration.
Mike has grooved with a number of bands over the years, including San Francisco favorites Big Blue Hearts, with whom he recorded an album for Geffen Records with T-Bone Burnett and toured as the opening act for Joe Walsh and other headliners.
Kevin has been drumming professionally since 1989. In addition to the Chickenbones, Kevin's resume includes spots with Ape, YellowWood Junction, Hand of Kindness, Jamie Clark and the Refractors and Brian Wachhorst.
The Chickenbones have played to enthusiastic crowds at Bay Area venues like Paradise Lounge, Slim's and San Gregorio General Store. They have opened for luminaries and legends like Box Set (at Sweetwater), Bob Weir's project Ratdog (at the Fillmore), Santana (on the Levi's stage at Shoreline), former Rolling Stone Mick Taylor (at Mick's Lounge) and the Tubes (at the Coastal Protection Music Festival). The Chickenbones are original musicians and skilled entertainers who can warm up a crowd for another band or rock a venue from happy hour to last call.
