    Artist description
"Alex Pangman is an incredibly young songstress from Toronto, Canada. At age 22 she must truly be one of the youngest of the Red Hot Mamas. In this debut CD Alex has drawn upon the cream of the crop of trad jazz musicians which she dubs the International Swing All Stars and with just cause. Leader/vocalist Alex Pangman is just plain wonderful and treats the old chestnuts with the respect these tunes deserve.Very much in the tradition of such imortals as Annette Hanshaw, Ruth Etting and Connie Boswell. Alex just captivates. She sounds great at 22 and I hope I live long evough to hear her when her young voice matures. She’s gonna’ develop a growl that just won’t quit! Wow! If you love this type of music or just want to know more about the 20s, buy this Cd. You’ll thank me for the review. I just know you will!"- Richard Bourcier/www.jazzreview.com

    Artist History
Alex was first introduced to the music of the twenties and thirties while only in her mid-teens and soon began performing it. Her musical accompaniment was provided by veteran "trad" jazz musicians of the greater Toronto area when she began to make a name and favorable reputation for herself as a pleasingly authentic singer of this classic music among the many supporters of it. Unlike most teens her age, she found a greater kinship with music made almost half a century before her birth... In 1996, while sitting in with the Hot Five Jazzmakers, she met internationally renowned Jeff Healey with whom she quickly formed a musical kinship, both of them sharing a passion for early jazz. Alex was able to enlarge her repertoire by drawing from his vast collection of jazz 78 rpms, and having worked locally in such Toronto hotspots as the Reservoir Lounge, the Courthouse, as well as the Toronto Du Maurier Festival etc. A favorite of jazz fans and dancers alike she is fast becoming one of Canada's leading classic jazz and traditional-swing vocalists, and has recorded with internationally renowned Jeff Healey, as well as performed with a number of major jazz bands and ensembles including Tyler Yarema and his Rhythm, and The Hot Five Jazzmakers, and In 1998 at the Oakville Jazz festival, performing with Jim Galloway's Allstars, Alex met trombonist Dan Barrett who dubbed her "Canada's swing sweetheart" . Her debut CD "Alex Pangman, They Say..." was released on May 11 1999 on the Sensation label, distributed by Verve/Universal, and features music which was made famous during the 1920s, 30s and 40s by ladies such as Ella Fitzgerald, Connie Boswell, and Bessie Smith. For this CD an impressive international cast of musicians was brought in from as far as New Orleans and England. It is a wonderful recording which is receiving great reviews. Please be sure to catch Alex live!

"This stunning debut by 22 year old swing vocalist Alex Pangman will knock your socks off! Alex sings like an angel on Classic American songs from the 20s and 30s. Ardour, gorgeous tones and imagination capture fifteen songs. A beautifully recorded jewel from Canada’s Sweetheart of Swing!"- Doug Willison"Alex Pangman exudes a sence of melody. Her's is a voice uncluttered, and her choice of material--from the CD's hot jazz anthem "Sing you Sinners", to this album's georgeous title track, "They Say..."--dovetails that clear, true, sweet sound in a startling way."- Nick Pitt, Sensation Records, May 1999 "Easily the star attraction was youthful singer, Alex Pangman. With a remarkably natural jazz inflected voice, Miss Pangman has picked up hints of Mildred Bailey, and early Lee Wiley, on her way to finding her own style"- Ken Crooke, The Bolden Times, May 1995"Neo-traditionalist newcomer Alex Pangman showed proper respect for the classics with a nifty rendition of the Louis Armstrong hit After You've Gone...(she) definitely showed some style."- Susan G. Cole, Now Magazine November 1997 "Pangman's voice was extraordinary in its maturity, matched only by her ability to interpret music that was written almost half a century before she was born."- Susan Johnson, the Guelph Mercury, June 1996"She has a firm handle on traditional blues, jazz and ballads. It was obvious to me she was not of the normal genre. She has something else!"- Mississauga News, August 1993"One of the exciting young jazz and swing artists emerging out of the scene, Alex Pangman has a powerful voice that commands attention."- T.O. Night, March 1998"Very promising, this young singer has a natural flair with a tune. She's not afraid to let herself go and act a bit, either."- Colleen Johnston, For the Record, June 17 1996"Alex is one of Toronto's best real jazz singers. The music is real swing and very danceable."- Peter Renzland, the Hogtown Hepcats
