Artist description
Justice On A Budget. It’s about the music. It’s about improvising. It’s about listening to each other. It’s about the groove. It’s about subtlety. It’s about communicating through your instrument. It’s about exploring. It’s about jazz, rock, ambient, funk and avant-garde. It obviously isn’t about a slick “promo package.” It’s about four musicians reaching towards one goal: collective improvisation. It’s about the music.Drummer Eric Hastings was raised in Atlanta and studied music at the University of Miami. There he hooked up with avant-jazz-weirdo’s The Jongleurs, who have released two albums, toured extensively, scored an independent movie soundtrack, and flipped a van. He also toured and recorded an album with ska-rockers, The Kind. Since moving up north, Eric has continued playing with a variety of different musicians in a variety of different situations. Some of his musical influences include Bill Frisell, Squarepusher, Sex Mob, Brian Blade, Mr. Bungle and The Simpsons.Cory Neale claims to have learned music through osmosis via a Sony Walkman. He has played double bass and bass guitar for more than 14 years and has recorded and toured extensively in the regional Northeast U.S. Cory has played in local Philadelphia groups the Barnabys (spinArt/Polygram), Camp Audrey, and cory (should’ve never missed that rehearsal!). Learning lessons from such Walkman Mentors as Eberhard Weber and Eddie Gomez in the jazz and experimental fields, and Peter Hooke (Joy Division, New Order), Terry Jackson (Thomas Dolby, various), and WAR, he blends these influences for colorful sounds.John Conahan is the man behind the keyboards. He has also been known to pull out a whistle or a percussion instrument from his magic box of tricks during a performance. He claims to have gained his knowledge of music at such institutions as Ithaca College, Manhattan School of Music, and the University of the Arts although these esteemed cornerstones of academia deny any affiliation with him. When John is not checking out Rashaan Roland Kirk, Sly & the Family Stone or the Counting Crows, you can find him playing solo piano dates, performing with the spoken-word project Collective Consciousness or with his own pop-rock group, The John Conahan Project.Based in Philadelphia, Justice On A Budget is concentrating on all venues including coffeehouses, bars, bookstores, colleges, clubs and outdoor festivals. Their draw has undeniably been their special brand of originality and unpredictability. They continue to fascinate and captivate their audiences and hope to maintain their pursuit of abstract grooves through eclectic invention.
