Artist description
We are from a small town called Glenelg, and the heritage and integrity of the GHS Jazz Ensemble has pushed all the students who have ever been in it to progress and become better musicians. The band has been set up the same way and handled the same way since Barry Enzman first set foot on the stage many years ago. The band plays a variety of different kinds of music and always manages to get them played the way they are supposed to be played. A big emphasis is put on improvisation and students are encouraged to solo as much as possible. The band has a huge, rich, full sound and graduating seniors are always sad to leave such a great band. |

This outstanding ensemble has distinguished itself by receiving hundreds of awards and first place finishes in local and national competions over Barry's tenure at Glenelg. This group has been featured at many conventions and competitions from Canada to Flordia. The Jazz Ensemble was selected and performed at the Montreux International Jazz Festival in Montreux, Switzerland, and the North Sea Jazz Festival in Den Haag, Holland on several occasions. They will be returning with their 1999 band to both of these festivals. This group has been featured on Maryland Public Television and local cable stations. This ensemble recently has also had the honor of being the jazz ensemble used in jazz legened Maynard Ferguson's first educational video. The band was selected by Mr. Ferguson because of its consistently superior performances and its high energy level! The band has opened for Maynard and The Count Basie Orchestra at concerts at Glenelg. In addition to this, the group has performed with amazing solists like Chris Vadala, Carl Filipiak, Rick Lillard, Don Junker, and Vaugn Nark to name a few. The Glenelg Jazz Ensemble also had the distinction of scoring the highest rating at the annual Maryland State Jazz Fesival.
