Artist History
The Touching Story of the UGLY MUGS Once upon every five seconds in any given time a band is born. This story is about one of those bands out of the infinite number. Nearly ten years ago there were some ignorant, self-righteous teenagers (nothing unusual) who thought they could earn a living playing music. Not only could they barely play their instruments, but they had no idea how to get gigs which holds true to this day. They lived in a preapocalyptic wasteland of housing tracks, shopping malls, and a yuppie labyrinth referred to as the paseos. The only live music to be found was country crud at local bars. There was also Hollywood, a Mecca of horrible music and pretty boys. "We do not want to be pretty," they thought to themselves, "we are going to be ugly" ; and thus their name. Little did they know they probably would have fit right in, but they were disgusted with having to pay to play somewhere. " We are the entertainment. It is we who should be paid," they said. "Foolish schmucks," retorted the club owner, "no one wants to pay for your crappy music unless you're famous!" Foolish perhaps they were, but they knew all too well that talent was not a prerequisite to fame and fortune. What they did not understand was that some sort of business sense was. Call it ass-kissing if you like. Although Hollywood was a mere forty miles away, they decided to move. North they went. They planned on settling in San Francisco, but ended up in Santa Cruz (whoops). At first Santa Cruz looked promising with a hand full of venues to play in. Little did they know that all anybody wanted to hear around there was blues, worldbeat, and punk. People just do not want to hear undanceable weirdness. Somehow they got some gigs here and there, but the venues were closing down left and right usually before they got around to playing at them. During these years of frustration they forged their sound from some sort of progressive punk into a heavy metal gothic cartoon. Amused and bemused by the world around them, they set out to contort the self-parodying rock show. Vast medleys were played layering melodies of various musical styles with comical changes in timbre and tempo. Not only were they over-stimulating for the ear, but also for the eye. They donned an array of disguises strictly for theatrical and entertainment purposes. Vision-impairing things like masks, huge beards, and hoods seemed to be their favorites. Their greatest getup was a large sheet that spanned across the stage. With their instruments in front they poked their hands and heads through to play while images were projected on to the sheet. These crazy outfits usually ended up hindering their ability to play as if someone turned up the suck knob. Fortunately the audience didn't know what the music was supposed to sound like, so they didn't seem to notice the proverbial knob of sucking. After living in Santa Cruz too long the young members started to develop lives which led to the inevitable fragmentation of the group, yet like oxen they still plod on. |
