Artist History
While playing all over the country, they have also been honored in their own home town by winning a Cleveland Free Times Cleveland Music Award 2000 as well as a Scene Magazine Music Award 2000 for "The Best Gothic Act." The awards were announced in Grammy style in award ceremonies in Cleveland on February 24 and May 2, 2000! They have played the Vampire's Halloween Ball in New York City in 1997 as well as the Vampire's Ball held in New Orleans in 1998 (a gathering of the Fang Clubs of New York and Los Angeles), as well as the Vampire's Valentine's Day Ball in New York City in 1999, ("A Celebration of Lust"). They continue to be a classic among the Children of The Night and have been invited to play the famous Club "Mother" at the "Long Black Veil" anniversary feast in March of 2000; a culmination of their many appearances at Mother over the years. They recently appeared in June 1999 on a segment of Playboy's "Sexcetera" (#3: The Vampire Cult Segment) on the Playboy channel. They have been written about in several nationally sold books on the underground movement such as in "Piercing the Darkness, Undercover with the Vampires of Today by Anne Rice biographer/Author Katherine Ramsland. She writes ..."February 14, 1999...The Cult of the Psychic Fetus, the band I had seen at my first vampire club, was playing, and this time I talked to them before they went on and was better prepared for their intense energy." Katherine had also been witness to events at the New York club "Mother" in 1997 where Empress Chi Chi Valenti is noted for first bringing this band into the national limelight when she first booked the band in her club and premiered the film "Cult of the Psychic Fetus," a short documentary film produced by Ravenous Pictures the avant guard division of Raven Films. In April of 2000 they were approached by the publishers of the Vampire Almanac to appear in their next edition. They have been photographed by world renowned Photographer Andreas Serrano, of "Piss Christ" fame, and have appeared in the internationally acclaimed photo art magazine "BIG," the music and fashion issue (Number 20), as one of Andreas's studies. They have been filmed as a part of a documentary film about the underground Goth scene called "Sex, Death & Eyeliner" that is being produced by NEO and Keith Border, one of the producers of the Hollywood films "The Prophecy" and "The Prophecy II" with Christopher Walken. They appear on two compilation CD's featuring the best of Rockabilly, Psychobilly and Gothabilly, currently put out by Skully Records of New York, to be released in August of this year and distributed by Caroline Records. The first is a Rockabilly compilation "Black Jacket Racket Vol. #3" containing the very best Rockabilly bands in the world. The Second compilation is the very best of Gothabilly from around the world. On "Wak'in the Dead" Cult of the Psychic Fetus is featured with two songs. Due to the overwhelming success of the first Gothabilly compilation and the great working relationship with RMG and Skully Records, the band will appear on a second Gothabilly comp due out on Halloween 2000. This second record is aptly called Rock'in Necropolis! Skully will also be putting out a video in 2000 containing music videos of all of these bands doing their favorite songs...Their videos have been aired and their music is also being used by "The Ghoul", a late night horror film show hosted by none other than "The Ghoul" on Warner Brother's Channel 55 out of Cleveland. They were most recently awarded the Cleveland Scene Music Award 2000 for best Gothic act on May 2,2000, where the Ghoul and his sidekick Froggy presented the award. Afterwards, on the streets of Cleveland, the Ghoul production team shot a special segment for the Ghoul Show of a certain unnamed Cult killing froggy, a regular and repeated affair on the Ghoul! Aside from their charismatic television and film debuts the band has also been charting on CMJ (College Music Journal) reporting stations out of Northern Ohio for the past year, prior even to the official release of their record.Their next album "ORGY OF THE DEAD" was put out by their record label, Raven Music Group (RMG) on March 30, 2000 and a third album "SHE DEVIL" will be released in summer 2000. Press Reviews
PRESS REVIEWS"In the beginning, there was rockabilly, then there was psychobilly, and now, Cult of the Psychic Fetus is proud to present gothabilly. The oddly named group has been kicking around Cleveland's hottest rock and Goth clubs since the mid-'90s and has even been featured in a few film endeavors. With Ghastly on "phantom guitar," Lord Erik on "funeral bass," Marcus Dark on "voodoo drums," and the Rev. Doom on vocals, the Cult of the Psychic Fetus delivers a horror-driven, reverb-drenched sound reminiscent of the Cramps' earlier material. The band possesses a rather spooky presence, and its lyrics are mainly concerned with creepy B-movie topics. Signed to the Raven Music Group in 1997, the Cult recently released a CD titled Orgy of the Dead and plans to release another, titled She Devil, this summer on the same label."Cleveland Scene Magazine (USA)"Gothabilly Fans of Early Damned and Cramps will appreciate this underground band's sense of morbid fun, overall, the CD sounds well done and the songs have a lot of energy that comes through effectively in the guitars and vocals." Outburn (Japan/USA)"Perhaps the biggest trap some goth bands fall into is the mistake of taking themselves too seriously. Thankfully, Cult of the Psychic Fetus avoids this pitfall with tongue in cheek campiness and an obvious awareness of just how hokey this genre can be. With Ghastly's reverb-saturated rockabilly guitar leading the way, Psychic Fetus delivers an upbeat, devilishly fun take on goth. The requisite eyeliner and black attire add a knowing wink to their routine, elevating Psychic Fetus above their brooding brethren." The Cleveland Free Times (Cleveland Ohio)"Halloween 1999 was one long weekend extravaganza. What with the parade, the parties, the drinks -- this little kitty was beat by All Souls Day, but I thought it fitting to play dead on the The Day Of The Dead! Cult of The Psychic Fetus (what a name!) took the stage [at CBGB's NYC] with a dark menace. Musically this band is extra finger-lickin' good. It's like these guys threw some goth, thrash and rock-a-billy in a cauldron and came out with a one-of-a-kind musical brew." New York Waste (New York), Cherry Cat, Reviewer "Brand new psychobilly band from the States. This is a great record, I really like their style. This band sounds a bit like a combination of the Cramps, Deadbolt and the Meteors. Those are great bands, so this band has to sound good!. There's only original songs on this CD, and they sound original too! And that's important nowadays! I'm gonna dig out more info on this band, so watch these pages..." Custom Built Magazine (Finland), Markku Salo, Reviewer"So then, you're wondering, just what is the Cult of the Psychic Fetus all about? You've maybe seen it in the shops, and it's under psychobilly (or somesuch) but the name of the band and, lets face it, the names of the members of the band have made you pause just before reaching into your pocket for some hard-earned. And even if you have got this far, I bet you are still wondering where they fall, hard edged super-psycho or humorous rockabilly a la Screaming Lord Such. Well, let me tell you this. This is one groovy album. Rev. Doom, the man on the the mic, has this hollow haunting voice which is well suited to the style and the content of the whole. It gives the album a sort of Goth-a-billy feel, if you know what I mean. Perhaps you remember Sunglasses after dark? Well, it's a bit like them without the violin, only a little less hectic but more polished. Well turned out. Anyway, I have mentioned one so why not mention them all? The band are the aforementioned Rev. Doom, Ghastly on the guitar, Lord Erik on bass and Markus Dark on the Drums. I should point out that there is an occasional soundbite included between the tracks too. Clips from hammer horror and similar films. Anyway, the music...It rocks. Ok? I am siting in front of the computer with the speakers bouncing away to either side thinking, this is good. My fingers are trying to keep the beat whilst typing this and let me tell you that is not simple. Far too many missed keystrokes! There is a good bassline all through the album and it just keeps coming, for nearly three quarters of an hour, which is really distracting if you are trying to do work. Don't do it! Just sit back, wind up the dial and enjoy! You know you want to. My favorite, though is "Orgy of the Dead". A rocking tune, oh yes! Groovy, and I love the sample at the beginning..."They wouldn't dare put both of us in the same grave, or would they?" "I should hope not, I hate you!"--what an introduction. Welcome to the Orgy of the Dead, whoa oh oh! Guitar....Ummmm, yes ok, I think that I shall leave it there for the moment before I get too carried away! So then, my conclusion? By it boys and girls, it's great!" The Psychobilly Database (England), Rubber Buccaneer, reviewer "This Ohio based band blew my mind when I saw them at Long Black Veil and the Vampyre Lounge. They presented a unique hammer/horror vampy feel with the lead singer, who made the image of Max Schreck in the 1922's Nosferatu look good. They have a CD due out this fall and will be performing at the Vampyre Ball in New York City."Vampyre Magazine (New York), Father Sebastian, reviewer."These guys are great. You don't get more horror than this, kids, Psychorockabilly at its very best, reminiscent of 45 grave and the Cramps, with campy, dark lyrics that take you on a sleigh ride to hell. Perfect for those evenings spent at home, performing necrophilic acts with your zombie pals. Psychic Fetus will compel you to perform the dance of DEATH!!!"Vampyre Magazine (New York), MH, reviewer. "Proof, once again, that you can't judge a book by its cover. When you do reviews like this you get a lot of CDs from people who have no idea what kind of music you do. When I got this and looked at it before I threw it in, it looked like this was some total goth band, and they still look like goths to me, but then again maybe that's what garage-psychos look like in Ohio. This CD is more on the Cramps old school garage surf side of psychobilly, but there is definitely a psychobilly influence. The singer takes a lot from Lux Interior, and the guitar and drums seem to take a lot from Deadbolt, along with pretty standard drums. The CD insert has some cool movie posters and stuff too. Song titles like "Orgy Of The Dead", "Dead Bride", "Death Drive at 95", and "Don't Look In The Basement" kind of give you an idea as to what kind of subjects these songs are hitting on, kind of like Misfits, Meteors, horror songs, the best kind in my opinion. Not bad, not sure I'd go see them live though, but the CD is pretty cool." West Coast Psychobilly (California), Josh K., Reviewer "The management of the group is in located in London, the CD is "Made in the U.S.A"- so it is somewhat of a problem to put the group in the correct geographical place. But it is much easier to put them in the right musical place, because songs like Dead Bride, Coffin Beggar, Hunting Hour or Orgy of the Dead tells their own story. Rev, Doom, Markus Dark, Lord Erik und Ghastly, that’s the name of the dark guys, who are doing…what? Right? Psycho. And it has its reason that I didn’t write Psychobilly, ‘cause you have to search some time for the billy part of it. The sound is horrifying, with a few pieces of several B-Movies. I would prefer a music which has more to do with Rockabilly, but the music will have its fans. And I hope for the buyers of the CD, that they look better than the band on the cover of the CD Dynamite Magazine (Germany), BN, Reviewer |
