Artist description
Bios are dreadful things to have to write. Yours truly should be the ideal candidate for the job - I know all the intimate details. Trouble is, I can't stomach the thought of more hackneyed phrases about how my songs are "introspective pop gems with a twist of melancholy and a dash of lament" (retch!) So I'll spare you the cringe-inducing purple prose in favour of a just-the-facts approach. First off, NO, I don't feel a calling from God that inspires me to write music. YES, I did get the itch to become a singer form watching too much MTV. NO, I've never lived out my van while busking to make ends meet in Alaska (much to my publicists chagrin...). YES, my first rehearsal space was next to Slik Toxic's - now there's a claim to fame. NO, I've never suffered a brain aneurysm while touring Europe. YES, I did knock myself unconscious following a failed crowd dive at a New Year's Eve gig with the infamous if short-lived Rhubarbarians.According to "The Rules" of the music industry (which are every bit as insidious and preposterous as that version for desperate single women) you're never supposed to write your own bio. So I guess I should count myself lucky that you've made it this far! Writing it yourself is supposed to make you look 'smalltime' - personally I think it just makes me look like a control freak, but what do I know? If I wrote this in the third person would you take me more seriously? Let's try it out….Alex Baird's music is wistful yet bright, with a melody and lyrics that are simple and accessible yet a little off balance. Like dancing on an uneven surface. Vocally, Alex's wonderful sense of musical expression is the perfect counterpart to the album's textured and moody instrumentation. Her lyrics are equally layered, swinging from wry storyteller observations such as "Anytime" and "Umbrella" to the more personal and immediate "Where Do You Go" and "Goodbye".There - are you impressed?. Did you hear a BBC announcer in your head instead of my humble rock chick voice? Hmm, maybe 'they' are right after all… |

Press Reviews
"Blown Away" - Music Director, CJMG Penticton, BC"Alex Baird’s Ish is as good as the work of any of the performers who joined Lilith Fair" - Kim Hughes, NOW Magazine"A potent mix of lush production and ethereal vocals, Ish sounds more like a major label debut than an indie demo. The ablum’s first single “Tell Me”, could easilysneak its way on to almost any radio playlist in the country. Another highlight is the stunningly beautiful “Goodbye”, a simple song with a mighty chorus. " - The Independent Weekly (U of T)"Alex seems to want to take girl music to a different level, sort of what McLachlan started to do 10 years back." - CHART Magazine "Compelling vocals, swirling musical accompaniments and definite toe-tapping appeal make for a winning combination" - The Telegram, St. John's NFLD |
