Artist History
In what is certain to be a long and lasting marriage between four friends from the Canadian prairies, the venerable New Meanies continue to explore the infancy of their career. And in its short existence, the blues rock outfit has seemingly come full circle. The New Meanies is comprised of Damon Mitchell (lead vocal and guitar), Jeff Hondubura (vocals and guitar), Sky Onosson (bass and keys) and Jason Kane (drums), all of whom are still in their twenties. The New Meanies burst onto the scene in their hometown with their independent recording Experience Is Lost (1993), shaking blues and rock fans from their peaceful slumber. The foursome continued to raise hell with their self-titled CD (then The Blue Meanies, 1995), burning a place in the revered Canadian blues line-up and building an ardent fan base. The release of Three Seeds (1998) on Virgin / EMI (the major label that came knocking in hopes of imitating and elevating the indie successes the band had already experienced), shifted the band’s direction. An onslaught of promotion and support dates for the album put the band on the road and in the spotlight. Singles soared up the charts, videos received heavy airplay and awards and nominations began to filter in. Tours included slots with Paul Rodgers in the US, Deep Purple, The Dave Matthews Band, Alice Cooper and multiple appearances with Big Sugar and The Watchmen. Three Seeds sold upwards of 15,000 units, and within two years the band played over 400 live shows. “We absorbed a lot during the time of Three Seeds,” says Mitchell. “We got to know the business on a whole different level, but most importantly we learnt that our fans liked what we had to offer the first time around. Which was also closer to what we liked doing as writers and performers.” Passing on the opportunity to remain with a corporate giant, the band instead chose to lay low and fulfill its own musical vision. That led to jamming several times a week (reminiscent of “old times”), and eight-tracking the music that spilt out every time they got together. Heading into the studio to record with a clean slate became their biggest goal.Musically the band has branched out. They’ve explored new rhythms and grooves, added new forms of percussion in the studio, and switched off instruments. The new material, which will be released the winter of 2000=2001, takes a step away from the hard edge of Three Seeds. Songs are more melodic, smooth in their groove, and lightened with a peppering of funk and jazz. The strong fellowship within the band – the unconditional respect between friends, and acceptance of one another’s ideas – was ultimately responsible for fostering the environment that made the new recording possible. |
