    Artist History
John Gregory was raised in a small South Texas border town. He sported his first guitar at the age of 5 and was quick to discover the advantage of living in a culturally diverse music scene. His high school band days took him to the pinnacle of hometown success as a drummer for a group his dad called the Hombres but soon after high school, his adventurous spirit took him to Europe where, for the next 5 years, he lived, traveled and studied... culture, traditions, history and art. John settled in Nashville shortly after to develop and pursue his enjoyment of songwriting. He spent time developing his skills while working the infamous Nashville songwriter's circuit, listening to the greats and the not so greats, learning his craft and discovering yet again, the art of experience. In these last few years, John has transformed as much as his music. Frustrated with mainstream sounds and with the help of his band, called simply Mostly John, he's put together a sound that is as uniquely identifiable as it is entertaining, and given it his own style of substance. With conviction and a roots grounded, well-traveled feel, Mostly John engages their audience in a feel good music with sounds ranging from Rock and Pop to Latin and folk, citing influence from artists like Crowded House, Paul Simon, Steve Earle, John Lennon, America and on and on ... The summer of 2000 found the band in the studio working on their first CD project titled “Acoustic Boogaloo”, an unplugged session recorded late one night; live in an attic studio in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Next to playing live this has obviously become the bands best promotion tool and has garnered enough local attention to set the stage for a new, full (easy on the production) studio release in the coming fall. Convincing vocals, well-balanced harmonies and lyrical storytelling lend themselves to a driving acoustic rhythm, a tastefully sassy acoustic/electric lead, and a great low-end vibe. The soulful drive of the percussion man is anchored on a tribal Djembe' ...and his ability to make it speak. This combination of elements, set to world beat undertones, and an exciting live performance come together to make the music of Mostly John as much an adventure as it is an experience."Soulful, swampy, sexy...all the right ingredients!!"-MJ fan

    Press Reviews
2001 NASHVILLE SCENE "Best of Nashville" Readers Poll:Mostly John, named one of the BEST up & coming Nashville bands. www.nashscene.com ***** INDIE-MUSIC.COM REVIEW - JENNIFER LAYTON: I love this band’s sense of humor. One of the flyers in their press kit has the band logo and a group shot of what looks like a tribe of aborigines banging away on bongos. Beneath the picture in small letters, it says, “just kidding.” The real flyer is right behind it.I also love this CD. Mostly John is a group of Nashville musicians, mostly named John, although bass player Ron-John Hite allegedly changed his name to earn a spot with the band. Guitarist Marc Pierce got to be the one to keep his name, but since he has more ex-wives than the rest of the band members combined have ex-girlfriends, I guess the rest of the group figured he’d suffered enough. (Really, you have got to see this press kit. I’m compiling a list of therapists in the Nashville area as soon as I’m done with this review.)“Acoustic Boogaloo” is the recording of an unplugged session recorded late one night in an attic studio. They’ve captured that intimate feel perfectly in the recording, creating a CD that sounds like it’s being performed right here in my apartment. It’s a must-have for acoustic rock fans. It will stand out in anyone’s acoustic CD collection because of the different musical flavors mixed in – percussionist John Wunderlich plays a djembe, a West African drum with a high pitch. On “Ordinary Man,” this ancient sound of the drum blends with a Spanish guitar and John Gregory’s down-home, soulful vocals. These guys are totally honest and unpretentious in their songwriting. They harmonize well and sound like they’re having fun. In “I Have to Make This Last,” the guitar strumming has the rolling sound of driving down the highway while Gregory sings from the soul of a drifter trying to slow his life down:“I had a fast car, I had a mind to run, I had a few bucks in my pocket, and that’ll get me back where I came from.”I love the chorus on “Round and Round.” Through the acoustic strumming and djembe beat, the vocalist takes a deep breath and sings, “I’ve been around and been around been around, round and around and been around been around been around, round and around...." If you ever see this band play live, please don’t ask for an encore on this one or they might pass out.You might also want to brace yourself for the CD’s final track, “Mary Annette.” The music is lovely – in fact, it has the feel of a 60s peace message folk song. But the lyrics are rather...well...um....okay, they involve puppetry and bondage and revenge fantasies and let’s just say that I’m not proud of the fact that it did make me laugh.
