Artist History
Rising from the ashes of two popular underground bands representing very different genres, M-80 spent the last year taking their hybrid punk sound and high energy live show on the road in the northeast to support their first, self titled release. Based in Providence Rhode Island, the band has quickly developed a reputation as a "must see" act. Winning over a variety of fans in a very short period of time, M-80 decided it was time to release a second CD to further solidify their diverse sound. Today M-80 explodes onto the scene with their second full length CD in under a year. Entitled, "Don't Take It Away", this 14 song collection represents the energetic, diverse and confident sound of an M-80 live show. More than just a "punk band", M-80 has created a new and interesting style of music that ranges from hardcore thrash punk to pop punk to straight up rock and roll. Recorded at Sound Station Seven in Providence Rhode Island and mastered by Grammy award winner, Tom Ruff of Mercenary Productions, the new project was approached more professionally. Looking for more than just "another punk record", the band set out to create a product that reveals the true energy and spirit of M-80. To complete the puzzle, the band brought in local producer Keith Souza, producer of the first M-80 CD, to man the controls. M-80 emerged from the studio with 14 songs of pure energy, aggression, melody and heart. Taking on a variety of subjects, all songs are drawn from various personal experiences. M-80 does not have a political agenda, they are simply four guys who love and enjoy creating music that people identify with. "Sick" looks at failed relationships, while "Drive" is about the daily commute. "Jean O" is a tribute to a friend of the band who had recently been killed in a car accident. "No Guarantee" proclaims the bands hard working attitude toward making music while still holding down jobs. On the propulsive title track, "Don't Take It Away", vocalists Ladin and Blaney articulate a fierce reluctance to part with youth. On each track, M-80 touches on subjects that real people know and understand. The key to diversity behind the M-80 sound is the variety of ages and backgrounds of its members. Guitarist Jeff Hanks (age 24) and Guitarist/Vocalist Dave Ladin (age 21) come from a ska background. Dave is in charge of the melodic singing on the CD and the two put together guitar harmonies that sooth the soul one minute and burn the room down the next. Bassist/Vocalist Christian Blaney (age 28) and drummer Paul Sumner (age 27) come from a thrash punk background. Christian provides hardcore screaming with a melodic conscience, as well as the backing vocal harmonies. Paul rips through the CD with a drum attack that would make anyone jump and kick. The dual lead vocals are a major element that separates M-80 from the rest of the pack. This versatility allows them to blend melody and pure aggression without seeming forced or fake. The music is real and the feelings are true to form.In short, M-80 is a band of four music fans who love to create music, play shows and travel. With their new 14 song CD, "Don't Take It Away", the band will continue to tour, have fun and further strengthen their fan base. The CD speaks for itself. The story behind M-80 is in the lyrics, music and energy released from within each song. |
