Artist History
Lycanthia formed in 1996 and released their debut self-titled demo in 1997. Their full-length CD "Myriad" was recorded in 1998 but its release was delayed due to record company hassles. It has now been released independently and is available by mail order directly from the band or from selected record stores. Two tracks from Myriad, "Rapture's Embrace" and "What Magick Falls Here?" were previously released as a single available at gigs or by mail order. Myriad features cello, flute, male and female vocals, keyboard, orchestral computer sequencing, 2 guitars, bass and drums and has a playing time of approximately 1 hour. Lycanthia have gigged semi-regularly since 1998. Line-up changes previously prevented regular gigging but frequent gigs can be expected to support the release of Myriad. Lycanthia also plan to begin recording new material early in 2000. Lycanthia are currently looking for two committed guitarists to join the band full-time. |

Press Reviews
From Loud! magazine, March 2000After being forced to sit on it for nearly two years, Sydney's Lycanthia have finally been able to release their debut Myriad. And what a gem is has turned out to be. In the absence of the long-promised Avrigus album, Lycanthia must surely take their place as the finest exponents of grand symphonic doom currently in local circulation. Myriad has a total of fifteen tracks spread over the course of just under an hour; a series of eight songs, each separated by a musical interlude, which segue seamlessly into one another for the duration of the album. Throughout, Lycanthia creates mood and atmosphere by the juxtaposition of Natalie Crawford's high, clean waif-like vocals and Lee Tassaker's dark and menacing growls and the combination of traditional metal instruments with traditional classical ones. The music then is slow-to-mid paced doom with broad strokes of folk as the acoustic instruments--guitar, flute and cello--combine with the slowly pounding plod of bass, drums and electric guitar, creating sweeping vistas of considerable magnitude like "What Magick Falls Here" and "Infinitude" with its sinister spoken word vocals. The mood of the individual songs is reflected in the accompanying instrumental interludes, each of which have their own identity from gentle keyboard meanderings to percussive pieces. Myriad is a fine piece of work, haunting, stark and beautiful all at once. |
