Artist History
In the summer of 1995, the promise of a successful tour of the Midwest with the band Black Valentine came to an abrupt halt with the untimely death of bassist Gabriell D. Valle. With little hope of continuing musical careers, the remaining members regrouped after one year to start writing new material. Singer, songwriter and guitarist Joseph Slinger and drummer Steve case began writing, rehearsing, and auditioning for a new band with a new image. They soon found bassist Mike Pozsony and guitarist Paul Jablonski, also working the local music scene, to fill the void. Somewhat unsure on how their “new sound” would go over in front of a live crowd, the quartet gigged weekly at Marble’s in Phillipsburg, NJ. The sound worked, the chemistry sizzled. The band played to an increasing crowd for the next 5 months. Mimicked because of their name-of-the-week, it was time to decide on a permanent name for the band and get serious. A friend suggested “Johnny-Seven” after a 1960’s Russian Cosmonaut doll, and the name stuck. In the summer of 1996, the band, now called Johnny-Seven, recorded a four-song self-entitled debut cassette featuring some of their strongest tunes at a prestigious studio in Red Bank, NJ. It was the demo which exposed Johnny-Seven to airplay at various college radio stations, cable access shows, and opened the door for many gigs, including hot spots in New York and in New Jersey. In March of 1997, Jablonski left the band to pursue future endeavors and Johnny-Seven picked up a friend named Eddie Stern for the new position, which they had known from being an opening one-man acoustic act for many of their New Hope, PA shows. The band played at the Shad Festival in Lambertville, NJ to a crowd of thousands and continued to gig at surrounding places. Eddie was temporary and soon left. The band was again a three-piece. Practicing often, Johnny-Seven took a break from playing clubs. Despite their missing lead guitarist, they took fourteen of their strongest songs and went in the studio to record their first CD. Enter guitarist Steve Cumberland after answering an ad in the Aquarian, a local music newspaper for the East Coast. Cumberland added a blues sound to the trio. He recorded over the lead and other guitar tracks for songs already recorded, and the band finally had a product to be proud of. “Hide” was finished and released at a hot spot in Bound Brook in November of 1998.Following the release of “Hide,” they were nominated for ‘best alternative band in 1999’ by the Asbury Park Music Awards. Airplay began on PA radio station 95.1 WZZO, NJ 105.5 WDHA, 95.9 WRAT and college stations in the tri-state area. Songs such as Sunday Morning, All the People, and Back on Earth continue to receive airplay and acclaim. The boys in the band are all hard working and dedicated to their musical careers, and each brings a different musical style to the mix. They play clubs, bars and benefits from New York to Michigan, and have gained overwhelming responses from critics and fans. The band is currently finishing their second CD entitled “All Over the Yard,” for an October 2000 release. |

Press Reviews
Robert Makin, The Courier News"Johnny-Seven's clever lyrics and tasty licks should be at the top of the pop-culture heap"Lydia Carole Defretos, The Aquarian"Each member brings a different element to the mix...look out in your clubs, record stores, and on your radio dials because the world will be seeing a lot more of Johhny-Seven in the near future"Paul "Daddy" Murray, The Staff"...really original and different from all the bands in the area...an excellent debut album. Johnny-Seven just became a little more popular for a "local band". |
