Artist History
The year of 1997 saw the initial inception of Sithlord under the monica of Enmity. Two long-time friends from the old 80's Heavy Metal scene of Melbourne, Australia; Snorkelbender (ex-Christbait, ex-Abramelin) on drums, and Saundies (ex-Rancor, ex-XXseX, ex-Reign In Blood) on guitar/vocals decided to construct an old-school Thash Metal outfit with moderate hints of the modern Black Metal influence. Their goal: To achieve the heaviest possible music they could whilst maintaining the clarity of performance. With music that Saundies had written prior to the band's inital beginnings, the pair stripped and re-constructed the riffs to obtain the maximum power and aggression. This melting pot generated a sound that includes influences from such bands as: Destruction, Kreator, Slayer and Mayhem without "cloning" them. The first two songs the duo finalised were, Summon "Thy Master" and "Angelique". A bassist and vocalist were recruited through an advertisement but due to indifferences in style they soon parted ways after two rehearsals. The band now intended to stay a three piece, but the thought of adding another guitar to the line-up was too intriguing. Three more songs were written by this time, two of which were "Enslaved To Hades" and "Labyrinth To The Gods". In July 1988 another long-time friend from the old Metal scene, Scott McMahon (ex-Medusa, ex-XXseX) was recruited as the second guitar player. From then on, the band blasted full-steam ahead while still searching for a bassist. During this time several bass players were approached to fill the position, but declined due to personal commitments of their own. However, Gash (ex-XXsex, Water, Glasshouse) was keen on filling the position, and completed the line-up. Sithlord played their first show on the 22nd of May 1999 under the title "Enmity". The show was greeted by a hearty reception from not only our own crowd as well as the fans of the headlining acts, "Gospel of the Horns" and "Abominator". The band were forced to change their name after this show due to another band with the same name. The name "Sithlord" was chosen as the appropriate title, as all members are fans of the Star Wars saga. Shortly after the first show, Sithlord parted ways with bassist Gash. The departure was due to personal differences and once again the band were left without a bassist. It wasn't too long before Jay Sanders (Anatomy, Hellspawn, Lube 42) offered his talents to the band. This was the cylinder that the Sithlord engine was missing, and now there was no turning back. A larger scale show was on the way and occured on June 25, 1999. Sithlord were asked to play support for Australia's Black Metal lords, Anatomy. With The Wolves and Sithlord in support, this was a night for pure Metal Mayhem. Once again Sithlord were given gutteral roars of approval from most of the Metal Maniacs there on the night. Tailing this latest show, Sithlord were asked to record a song for inclusion on a compilation CD entitled "Under The Southern Cross". This forced Sithlord into the recording studio, and the band recorded five tracks to be used for promotional purposes. The five songs recorded were, "Enslaved To Hades", "Dawning Of The New Millenium In Darkness", "Labyrinth To The Gods", "Disinterred Faith", and "Angelique". But the best was still yet to come. Sithlord were asked to play support for Australia's Kings Of Metal, "Pegazus" (a priority 1 signing to Nuclear Blast) in late October, 1999. This was an honor to be asked to play at such a prestigious venue as the HiFi Ballroom in Melbourne's city. For this show Sithlord decided to play a cover tune for the first time in a live set. The song chosen was the classic W.A.S.P. tune "Animal (Fuck Like A Beast)". This proved to be a real crowd teaser, and has so far remained a part of the live set. Overall this show was a success for the band, gaining overwhelming reviews in local street press'. In December 1999 the "Under The Southern Cross" compilation disc was released by Nik Tropiano through Chatterbox Records. This CD contains thirty of Australia's finest Extreme Metal artists such as: "Anatomy", "Sadistik Exekution", "Damaged", "Alchemist", "Armoured Angel", and "Earth". Sithlord submitted the track "Enslaved To Hades" for the CD, and for a promotional recording this song stands it's ground impassively. |
