Artist History
As we watch this band claw it's way through the local charm city venues, one thing is becoming particularly clear – SEVEN PLANET SUN is challenging the bounds of Baltimore's historically factioned music scene. Since the day Dan Luperini (Vocals/Guitar) and Mark Tuminello (Bass) met in the summer of 1997, the band has continued to plug away on both the local and non-local fronts. A band whose content ventures outside the limits of the ever popular Baltimore staples of punk/post-punk and power-pop, SEVEN PLANET SUN has invevitably built their following more gradually than their musical peers. This has been possible through their endurance, which has been fueled by the unassumingly universal appeal of their unique music. Dan and Mark, along with Lilah Evans (guitar) and Matt Bowers (drums), subtly fuse the acessibility of modern rock with the impudence of punk, while creating an almost soulful groove as a foundation. Sitting atop are melodies that range from the clever and whimsical Nevermore to the hauntingly wistful Goodbye My Love. The final product is at times angular and irreverent, while at times beautiful and eloquent. As they dance in between the lines of many musical styles, SEVEN PLANET SUN rarely explores familiar territory. ‘Stone Scruggs’ in a Musician’s Monthly review of the band’s most recently released Extended Play CD, ‘Not For Sale’ alluded to this.. “.. and now I shall laud myself for getting through an entire review without a comparison to another band”. SEVEN PLANET SUN has used this to their advantage – finding their way to the stages of many different clubs (such as local venues Wyatt’s Saloon, the Brass Monkey, The Vault, The Café Tattoo, the 8x10, and theOttobar, as well as ‘out of town’ clubs such as D.C.’s The Black Cat, and New York’s Elbow Room and CBGB), and sharing bills with a diverse array of acts (ranging from power pop’s Love Nut and Splitsville to underground math-rockers ‘Roads To Space Travel, to the psychedelic Bardo Pond ). Wherever you find them, you are sure to see a stirring show with no frills, where the emotion of the music comes through in their strong performance. |
