Artist description
Luke Brindley's music dovetails rich, poetic lyrics with uncommon guitar skill to create songs and instrumental compositions which wow audiences as much as they inspire them. Sometimes stark and minimalist and other times dazzling and explosive, the music both enlightens and entertains.
Luke cultivated his singular musical voice through university study in music, solo and ensemble performances in the NYC area and around the world (including West Africa and Eastern Europe), and active learning from his forbears in the folk and fingerstyle guitar traditions. "I'm constantly learning from all of my favorite songwriters and musicians," says Luke. "Whether it's the lyrical grace of Bruce Cockburn and Nick Drake or the inventive guitar playing of Michael Hedges and Ali Farke Toure, I soak in the beauty of the music I love and it bleeds into what I create." Luke also names songwriters Pierce Pettis and Bill Mallonee, guitar masters D'Gary, John Renbourn, and Mississippi John Hurt as well as kora master Toumani Diabate among his other influences.
Luke has released two CDs. How Faint the Whisper, released May 2001 and Spring Song, released August 2000.
Spring Song was released to enthusiastic reviews, national airplay, and inclusion in several Best of 2000 lists including George Graham's of WVIA-FM Scranton, PA and the Just Folks Program on WSCL and WSDL Baltimore, MD.
Luke performs regularly in New York City and the outlying areas. Jen Milner of All-Angels, one of the premier acoustic listening rooms in NYC, has called him, "One of the best guitarists in New York...a definite star on the rise!" Brian Kramer of the Barn Concert Series says, "Luke Brindley's music is a perfect blend of originality and familiarity. He quickly and easily endears himself to every audience he plays for." Luke is often joined by multi-instrumentalist Daniel Brindley on percussion, piano, guitar, vocals, and accordion.
