Press Reviews
Recording in the United Kingdom since the 1970s, Ken's direct influence of the Berlin School is displayed without flaw.
KEN MARTIN probably comes the closest to sounding like Klaus Schulze of any musical artist I have heard. That is not suppose to be good or bad, just to give you an idea of his truly Berlin School sound. You are missing out on an incredible electronic musician if you haven't checked out Ken Martin.../Tony Gerber S.F.M Records, Nashville............
Classic dronology that taps into the most tame moments of early electronic Krautrock. Synth notes and chords vibrate and drift, creating a multicolored haze. (Reviewed by Marc K.) Listen comIt's impossible to tell that Ken's roots are closer to Basildon than Berlin.A prolific music maker since the early 70's, Ken's brand of Kosmische musik comes wholeheartedly recommended by mp3autobahn and krautrocknet.com, for lovers of Klaus Schulze, early Tangerine Dream.Nigel Pennington Krautrocknet.com
Chaos with the UK's postal service (a very different type of chaos to that found on the more avant guarde Krautrock LPs) didn't stop my trusty postman from delivering two new CD's from Basildon's answer to Berlin - Ken Martin. First a demo from Ken, TOKYO NIGHTS, loosely inspired by Ashra, circa Correlations. Clocking in at over 11 minutes, this is sequencer driven music of a high-class pedigree, initially created in under an hour! A stimulating alternative to Ken's lush, luxurious Berlin inspired space music, which is exactly what you'll find on Ken's latest long player offering: BERLIN IMPRESSIONS 3.
Ken carries on a tradition that Tangerine Dream and Klaus Schulze shamefully abandoned in the late 70's. Along with Kubusscnitt and the Space For Music roster, Ken takes inspiration from the Berlin School and expands upon it with his own Kosmische consciousness. All the tracks on Impressions have a sense of outer space, perhaps inspired by Zeit and Atem, the execution of the tracks often leans more to Rubicon or Pheadra. Opening with electronic textures panning from speaker to speaker, an almost symphonic synth leads the melody over the pulses of a slow spacey sounding sequencer, Through The Vortex Of Liquid Light couldn't assume a more apt title.
On This Horizon of Kaladis conjures up visions of daybreak on a cold, lonely planet - space music at its most atmospheric.
Starting with a lovely synth motif followed by sequencers, title track Impressions sometimes lends itself to Terry Riley as much as Tangerine Dream. Ken's restraint and musical economy contribute to the all-pervasive spacey vibe. Andromeda Fall Out sees us floating through cold vacuous space with only ice textures, alien space signals and mellotrons for company. Neurophrasing closes our inner space trip with a 10 minute solar tone-poem.Review by Nigel Pennington for Krautrocknet.com
Perfect music for sitting out on a summer's evening, stretching your imagination and staring at the stars.
