Press Reviews
By ERIC D. SNIDER. The Daily Herald. Payson's resident poet-cowboy Jesse Thurgood has returned with "The Road I Walk Today," a follow-up to his wonderful 1997 album, "Learning How to Dance." Thurgood's songs have only gotten better in the last three years. Nearly every piece on this album resonates with beauty, depth and emotion, yet avoids triteness like the plague. The music is often what you'd call "pretty," but is often more haunting and beguiling than such simple terms as "pretty" would normally allow. "Dreams of Blue" sings of the ocean as a "cold mistress" whose siren song leads "many a mate (to) find a sad fate, trying to answer the call." The genuinely touching "She Sent Her Love" tells the true story of a destitute widow who joined a "lonely hearts" club and fell in love with her pen pal. Other songs cover such diverse topics as trains, prayer, and taking chances, all of them written with care and performed with absolute precision. Acoustic guitar is the main instrument, and Thurgood plays it like the pro he is. He is occasionally backed up by some other talented folks, but the music never loses sight of what it's meant to be: an acoustic album of soulful, painstakingly real songs. One cannot listen to Thurgood without being awed by his songwriting skills, not to mention his proficiency on the guitar. Grade: A |
