Press Reviews
The Washington Post (July 16th, 2000)---
There are seven tracks on Gist's "Pretest Restest," but things are more compicated-or simpler than the track listing suggests. The local quartet (not to be confused with the influential '80s Welsh outfit the Gist)
segues from interludes to instrumentals to alt-rock songs, but I'mmortal," the third track, turns out to be the last song. That's dissappointing, since these tunes (the other is "Engine Out") are the CD's most
appealing offerings.
Not that the instrumentals are bad. The driving "Traffic" and neo-impressionist piano etude "To Mom and Dad" are entirely presentable. (As for the interludes: It's time for a UNESCO ban on musicians
incorporating answering machine messages into their work.) Still, the two rockers are the richest and most eventful tracks, showing a flair for melody and juxtaposition that should serve the band well should it
ever decide to release a CD with a full four or five songs.

If you are into that new DC sound like dismemberment plan or baltimore's Scott Farkus affair, seek out these fellas because they add some strange fusion parts that reels in that growing sound-- coupled with some hypnotic vocal parts that should quench that thirst.

Reviews-Matthew Wilson-UNBSJ---
Now onto Gist, from Washington D.C. This band was very interesting. It will be super hard for me to explain the type of music that they play. From what I could gather, this band played a combination of rock, post punk and a bit of D.C. Hardcore; all with a very emo feel. When they played, their funny timing and dynamics immediately made me think of our hometown heroes, NFA. Another notable point about this band is that they use a keyboard sometimes. I cant get into much more detail than that without confusing all of you. I suggest that you go to their website and check them out because listening to them is an
experience. |
