Artist History
Official Biography from the release of The Last Polka – 1999“Back in the beginning we used to say, ‘We shall come, we shall rock and we shall destroy and conquer.’ We wanted to break down all barriers…we wanted to play at any bar, any event and in front of any group of people…we wanted everyone to be able to come to one of our shows and feel like they belong. This is more than just a band, a bunch of songs and a show…this is a whole new way of drinking Jagermeister.”With a smile in her voice, Tina says goodbye….It all started with Tina’s grandmother who toured with the Russian Opera. Music was in the family blood. As a young girl, the Minneapolis-born Tina Schlieske had wanted to be a performer since listening to her mother play albums by the likes of Neil Diamond and Joni Mitchell. When she was 13, her dad bought Tina her first guitar and she began writing songs. By 16, she owned her first electric guitar. Shortly afterward she started her first band, Tina and the B-Sides, named after an offshoot group formed by Adam of Adam & the Ants. Since then, one of the greatest strengths of the band has always been the pur joy of playing together and the respect held for one another.Between 1990 and 1994, the band recorded and released 3 albums on their own indie label, Movement Records. Selling over 50,000 albums in the Midwest, they were voted Best Pop Group of ’93 and ’94 by the Minnesota Music Academy. They soon drew the attention of Sire Records’ Seymour Stein, a man who had previously signed such female pop-rock superstars as Madonna, Chrissie Hynde, Deborah Harry and K.D. Lang. The band signed with Sire and would stay for four years.Tina and the B-Sides major label debut, Salvation, was recorded and released in ’96. Her experiences in ‘Tinseltown’ made her realize that how important it was to be true to herself the next time she had an opportunity to record an album. It’s All Just The Same was the result…“Going home was the best thing that could have happened to me, ” says Tina about the return to her Midwestern turf to record the new album with her band mates. “I decided to go for broke and put out the album I wanted to. And now, no matter what happens, at least I pleased myself.”While influenced by role models such as Aretha Franklin, David Bowie, Janis Joplin, Bruce Springsteen and Roy Orbison, and working with Minneapolis musicians like Jayhawks’ Gary Louris and LA players such as Me’Shell NdegeOcello, Tina has molded her own unique blend of blues, country, soul pop and R&B. The Last Polka is a final offering to the loyal and dedicated fans. Tina wanted to capture the true power of their live performance and energy on stage. Tina says, “We’re just going to play and do what we love to do and whatever happens, happens.” The result was The Last Polka.“I’m going to take things as they come, but I do have goals. I want to be in a financial and artistic place where I have the freedom to continue to do what I’m doing. And, I want to be regarded as an artist who made her mark, someone who people can look back on and say, she added something to the music industry, either by her performances of her songwriting.” - Tina |
