Artist History
The Sisters came about quite by accident in mid-1998. Two of our members, Kiki Hood and Rebekkah Graves, were co-music directors at a church in Seattle, Pilgrim Congregational Church, which hosts regular benefit concerts with the ultimate goal of raising money for its historic Hook and Hastings pipe organ. It was decided that a concert on women composers was begging to be done, so these crazy co-directors set about organizing a concert along those lines (Kiki did most of the work!). The concert covered the map, from Hildegard all the way up to the present day, including one work, "Ysayas cecinit", whose ink was still damp! In order to perform some of these works, an ensemble of women's voices was needed, so Kiki collected several women singers she knew to rehearse and ultimately perform these songs. The producer of the concert, Verne Eke, asked what the ensemble was to be called, and off the top of her head, Kiki said "The Sisters". Her reasoning was that we were women, and sisters (nuns) would havesung most of the works we were doing, so it seemed logical. Little did we know that we had created a monster... After the concert (which was very successful -- thanks to all who took part!), we were all asked "When are the Sisters singing again?" We distilled the group down into a trio, Kiki, Rebekkah, and Kathy, and began rehearsing some more songs. |
