Artist History
Portland, Maine? Yeah, you can almost feel that freezing cold cymbal stand in your hand as you crunch across the snow to the load-in entrance at the back of the club; or Dan Paul's surfy lead guitar jangling on a summer sea breeze as it blows through the Old Port. It's fitting that this dynamic climate produced The Reedlings. This two-man recording team, Steve Hodgkin and Dan Paul are continuing to craft melodic songs with big, catchy choruses. "The cherry on the Reedlings cake- good literate songwriting." Scott Sutherland, The Portland Press Herald. The Portland ME radio community instantly embraced The Reedlings. Within weeks of its release, "These Days" hit local shows on WCYY & WFNX (Modern/Alternative Rock) and WCLZ on a regular basis, as well as crossing over to the adult contemporary genre with a rotation slot on WMGX and college radio on WMPG. The Reedlings enjoyed similar success with "Measure", "Faster Car", and "Anyone." The Portland Phoenix nominated The Reedlings for Best New Local Band of 2000 and Best Rock Act for 2001. Their latest full-lenght CD "Less Pretending" is scheduled for release in April 2002. |

Press Reviews
The Reedlings may be a new name among local bands, but its members are no strangers to the scene. Singer guitarist Steve Hodgkin and lead guitarist Dan Paul both played in the cover band Skinny Mulligan, while bassist Eric Drew and drummer Doug Watt performed together in the bands Carbon 14 and The Lime Rockets. A couple years ago, following the demise of Skinny Mulligan, Hodgkin and Paul got together to write songs, with the idea of eventually forming a band to play them. The pair recorded a dozen of those songs in Hodgkin's Munjoy Hill apartment, playing all the instruments themselves. The result is a smart collection of mature guitar pop that betrays none of the self-consciousness that so often plagues budding young bands. The songs are mostly tightly structured pop, with strong vocals, solid instrumentals and ? the cherry on The Reedlings' cake ? good, literate songwriting. The recording was made to attract a rhythm section and land gigs, Hodgkin reports, and it's been successful at both; Drew and Watt have been part of The Reedlings' team for a while now, and the band is starting to play out on a regular basis. (As an added bonus, the untitled 12-song collection ? which incidentally sounds great, home recording set-up and all ? is for sale at Bull Moose for $10.) Hodgkin also reports that the quartet is writing new stuff ? with an emphasis on its obvious vocal skills ? as a band and is hoping to record soon. If Hodgkins' and Paul's first effort is any indication of what The Reedlings can do, then I'm already looking forward to the full-band follow-up. |
