Artist description
A spiritual folk-rock singer and guitarist who achieves both apocalyptic imagery and childlike innocence, Tara MacLean fuses organic folk melodies with the appealing hooks of poppy rock. MacLean’s lyrics involve the unending yin-yang of religion and myth, man and nature, unity and chaos, fire and water. Her songs strike a delicate balance between radiant energy and soothing calm, tapping into the narrow, peaceful space that exists between the two. |

Artist History
Twenty-six-year-old MacLean was born in Canada’s Prince Edward Island to musician parents, growing up in a log cabin with no running water or electricity until the age of four. It was there that she first developed her now profound respect for the environment. Natural drugs, Bob Dylan, her father’s original gospel songs and the solitude of the forest influence MacLean’s songs, and she has crusaded politically against logging companies and for the legalization of marijuana. MacLean was singing with some friends on a ferry en route to an island in British Colombia when she was “discovered” by two executives of Nettwerk Records and subsequently signed with the company. Her debut album, “Silence,” was released in 1996, and in 1997 she was named Best New Solo Artist at the Canadian Radio Music Awards. She has toured extensively, both as a headliner and opening for the likes of Paula Cole, Barenaked Ladies, the Cure, Lisa Loeb and Sarah McLachlan, as well as performing on all three Lilith Fair tours. Her music has also been featured on a number of film soundtracks, including "Teaching Mrs. Tingle," as well as on a slew of television series, including "Dawson's Creek," "Roswell" and "Charmed." Her second full-length album, “Passenger,” was released by Nettwerk in Canada late in 1999 and by Capitol Records in the US in February 2000. |
