Artist History
A mutual fear of God and love for Reggae between Stefano, Kevin and Walter, laid the foundation of the Mighty Levites. 'Jam-down sessions', improvisational or otherwise, occurred almost daily as a musical 'outlet' between 1993 - 1997. They played coffee shops in the College Strip area of Akron under the name 'Newcomers of the Dallol Depression'. During the spring of 1998 they decided to formalize themselves. They descended into the basement to tighten up & song-write. They emerged a year later, renaming themselves the Mighty Levites and began frequenting venues all over Akron, Cleveland, and Kent as a three piece Reggae-jam band blending originals and covers to entertain and educate the masses.Their first addition was percussionist Bryan, a frequent participant during the 'Dallol Depression jam-downs' with friends. In the summer of 1999 he reunited with Kevin, Walter and Stefano to enhance the music with an earthy, meditative, nyabinghi-chant drum style.Soon after came Eric Howell with his keyboard and saxophone, taking the edge off a 'raw' three piece. Eric and Stefano were both members of the now defunct reggae band 'Clinton Doesn't Inhale'.Mike Moritz was also involved in 'Clinton Doesn't Inhale'. His energy and rhythmic, almost scientific precision was the icing on the cake. Since then the Mighty Levites have matured into a force on the Ohio Reggae scene, opening for the likes of Burning Spear in Columbus, OH and Toots and the Maytals in Cleveland, OH. Mighty Levites are dedicated to their ministry of music, approaching it with a humility unbeknownst among bands, keeping the 'real and the positive' in the worldwide odyssey of Reggae. In Jamaica, this kingly music was a vehicle that instilled faith, hope, and a unifying love in the downtrodden people of Jah. Continuing in the spirit is the ultimate mission of the Mighty Levites. |
